favoritism

I came here specifically looking for favoritism. I didn't know much about knives when I got here and I needed all the help I could get. I spent quite a bit of time getting to know everybody's favorites. Then I did some independent research and finally settled on some brands that I liked. Fortunately, a lot of people who post on forums like BF actually know what the hell they're talking about. They've served me well. And it's really not too difficult to separate them from the fanboys, at least it's not for me.

A lot of fanboyerism here.

One of the funnier ones: some guy was asking recommendations for a fixed blade survival knife, a Chris Reeve fanboi comes out of nowhere and suggest a small sebenza. lol That's a bit too far.

Yes, that DOES get funny.
I try to suggest knives which fit the criteria of the person asking.
Of course, there's only a few brands I really like, so my suggestions will generally be one of them(Spyderco, Emerson, Benchmade mostly), as I can have an actual opinion on them.
Oh, and now that I have an Umnumzaan, THAT will be the answer to every question!:D

There's a noticeable difference between fanboyism and fanaticism. I would consider myself a fanboy for Spyderco because if somebody asks for a folder recommendation I will most likely suggest something from Spyderco.

What I'm not is a rabid fanatic: if somebody complains they got a defective knife or that they don't like a particular model I won't go on the attack or question their honesty.

There are rabid fanatics for most every maker that occasionally post on BFC. Make even the slightest suggestion their chosen brand is flawed in any way and they will question your honesty, patriotism, marital status of your parents and sometimes even your gender! It's a little scary that somebody cares about a hobby that much. No maker is that good (well, except for Spyderco):D

I really like spyderco, chris reeve, busse, BM and BRKT. I have had great experiences with these brands. Thus i will recommend them. Other brands have yet to be tried or I just dont like--thus I will not recommend them as I dont have experience or have a dislike. That makes sense to me--why would I suggest stuff I havent used or dont like?

If a lot of people suggest a certain model of knife it probably is a good knife. If lots of people say one is crap--it probably is. Sorry but thats just logic. I dont see that as fanboyism etc.

nah, a fanboy is a fanatic, just the modern vernacular. it's never a good thing to call yourself a fanboy.

I disagree big time, i consider myself a busse, CRK, RAT Fan boy but i dont freak out whenever someone bashes busse or every time someone picks a cold steel. its their loss man. im just passionate about what i like and i am gonna support the companies i like the best so that they wil continue to make fine products for me to enjoy, i am one of the guys who as mentioned earlier has spent over 10k on knives and i have formed some opinions over time. i likes what i likes.
You can get the ultra high end performance from busses and CRK

You can get a great value from great guys Like RAT

or you can get a good knife on the cheap:im picking up a boker trance htis weekend to try out. :D

i dont see why people have to argue, i still dont have nearly the collection i want so im generally not gonna bash other peoplles choices, hell i might even pick up a dork ops simply because i just love nad am passionate about knives :gasp: :p

If I join the "The Church of the Heavenly Kershaw" can I write-off Kershaw purchases as a tax deduction?

What about a pilgrimage to see the glorious guys and gals from Golden?

Sign me up.

Oh yeah exactly. That's the power of word of mouth.

A lot of companies think it's ok loose 1 or 2 customer, but they are not loosing 1 or 2, they are loosing 1 and the people that 1 person talk to, and those that talk to others.... It's serious. That's why it is important to satisfy every customer so they can spread the word.

it's not a matter of my opinion, just how the word is used. a fanboy is a bad thing, someone who rejects dissenting opinion

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=fanboy

.

well i could easily add my own knife related deffinition to urban dictionary that completley validates my cause so i dont see how thats to relevant, actually thats a lie i get it but i still disagree. i can see how the word may in some circles carry with it a negative connotation but i think the meaning can get switched up a little when you talk about things other than video games and hobbits, im a MAGPUL fanboy does anybody wanna try and tell me that p-mags are inferior to issue mags? i dont think so... its all aobut word usage which i might add evolves with culture:)

Right. The term "fanboy" is fairly ambiguous; however, among many internet communities, it is typically defined as someone who goes far beyond being a simple fan. It would be a person who latches on to a product or idea and will fight for it tooth and nail, often choosing to either disregard or discredit others attempts to show it's faults. ...and more often that not, their rationale is quite irrational.

As knives are more of a "real world" hobby, I would imagine the definition is a bit more loose on these forums.

You know that guy?
Yea... him.
That guy who still has a collection of 400 cassette tapes and refuses to buy a CD player for his car because the CDs can get scratched?
And when you ask him about it, he gets all defensive and mocks you for spending $15 on a new CD when he can just record anything he wants off of the radio?
Fanboy. :p

The only thing I don't like is how SOG gets such a bad reputation here. Personally, I love SOG and never had any problems with their products. In fact, I'm going to post a picture of my SOG Trident right now.

Favoritism...shows up for a reason.

Spyderco, Kershaw, RAT, Chris Reeve, etc, all make damn good knives. AND...they are widely owned so they will get alot of pub.

We discuss and recommend that which we are familiar with and respect.

If you hear ten straight people say a Spyderco Para is a great knife for around $100-$130...and that bothers you and you want to ignore that...fine.
It's your money. But those answers are given for a good reason.

Nothing wrong with brand loyalty at all. If a company makes something good and treats it's customers right I will continue to buy that product.

This goes for knives, cars, shirts, pants, shoes, watches, tires, flashlights, etc....etc....etc...

Weeeeeeeeeee...

I don't mind people showing favoritism one bit, it's when people start brand bashing that it starts to irritate me.
