With all the aftermarket interest in the Moran, seems like it's on the way to becoming the Ruger 10/22 of the knife world!

Frank

Frank,

Darned apt analogy! 10/22 = Spydie Moran. Still like your photography of it on your web page.

For those that may not know, Frank is also known as Little River Trading and is great to deal with... sells Spydie Morans to boot!!!

Harri,

No the cannel edge isn't the same as a Moran edge, but as Sal says the puppy is still extraordinarily sharp.

I did NOT escape from the institution! They gave me a day pass!

Sal,

I'm sure that I'm not the first to ask, but have you considered asking Bill Moran to design a drop point version? That would be sweet.

Bill has already designed a drop point to fit the same handle. We're watching sales on the current model before adding another SKU.

I like the idea of a drop-point version of the Moran Featherweight, so much that I actually modified mine to be one. Needless to say, I'm pleased to hear you're thinking about making this a regular production item. It wouldn't bother me at all if you had to sacrifice the swept point version to make it happen.

This is impossible for me to verify, but I'd guess a drop point would outsell the trailing point in a side by side contest. What does everyone else think?

David Rock

One reason I' ve held off on the Moran for a while before giving in was because of the swept point. Drop Point?? Ya D*MN right! David Rock put it rather well.

Every new Spyderco is a cause for a little introspection, "Does this knife talk to me, the classic round hole, clip and usual Spyderco savvy. Do I have the money? Where is the kids piggy-bank?"

But a Moran drop point is calling me, it will go well with my trailing point, ahhhhhhh.

... well so the Moran edge is gone... in my mind so is the magic

... well one less knife on my list now (there are lots of other Spydercos there still, plain edge Starmate on top, followed by serrated Military - both with rolling lock - come on Sal hurry up with the lock

)... or maybe I can still find one of the old Morans...

Harri.

Does anyone know the grit finish of the original Moran Featherweight? I'm thinking of getting a new Moran and restoring it to the same old mirror finish.

No, I was never lost. But I was mighty bewildered one time for three days.

I would buy a Moran Drop point. Although the old style Moran, which I picked up for a shocking price on e-bay, looks fine. Drop points are nicer for hunting and fishing, IMHO, but I'm sure this will take care of a Blue fish or gut a deer.

What is the latest word on Spyderco selling the new style sheath? If not I'll order one from Chai.

I recently got a chance to inspect the Moran Featherweight and its leather sheath when a customer asked me to develop a custom Kydex sheath for it. The leather sheath is well made and rather attractive, but it has two main drawbacks:
1) Lack of versatility- you are pretty much limited to crossdraw style.
2) The sheath englufs almost the entire handle in it, so drawing it is difficult.
I made three different Moran sheaths, which can be seen here. I have one available at this time, and it is versatile (vertical or horizontal carry options) and exposes the enire handle from the beginning of the rubber inlay near the blade and back. When you draw from this sheath your entire hand is fully where it wants to be on the handle, and you would not have to juggle the bloade or choke up the handle to get a good grip. You have a perfect grip even before you make the draw.
Anyway, there are other options than the EdgeWorks and others mentioned. As I said, I have the one available right now and I am selling for $35 shipped. i can also design one with fully custom options for about the same price, so let me know if I can be of service to any fellow Spydie fans! I also make neck sheaths for folders, etc. I'm willing to try anything!

Mr. Glesser,
If you adopt the Moran Featherweight in a drop point I will have to pitch a tent outside of my knifeguys shop because I HAVE to have one right away! So PLEASE!! Go for it!! Also, why all of this hubbub over the sheath?? If you don't like it in the crossdraw position, wear it on the strong-side. I, for one, am apprx. 60 lbs. overweight (whew!) and I find this knife MUCH more comfy to carry than the average vertical sheath. After a very short adjustment period, I have grown rather fond of this carry mode. The knife fits in the sheath very securely so I'm not overly concerned with losing the blade. Satin finish with kydex sheath? Great idea. I love options! How about a horizontal carry mode option?
Thanks for ALL that you are doing for the cutlery industry!

Sal,

You stated in a thread mentioned above, with link, that:
Once it[kydex sheath] is in production, we will make it available to those that want one, one way or another.

Is it available? How much? (I would not want to pay proportionately more for the new sheath than I did for the knife and leather sheath!]

I just bought another shiny Spyderco Moran--shiny objects always catch fishermen....
Now I will have one to use and one saved just to see if that new knife is as sharp out of the box as a convex edged Spyderco Moran! I would like to put the one for use in a Kydex 100, Concealex, or similar, sheath.
(If you answered this recently in another thread I did not see it...I had to cut back my knife reading to a few minutes, instead of a few hours. Of course now the time will be better spent as I have a faster connection. Thanks.)

Donald.

Misque - The new sheath ha a "Tech-lock" fastener that permits putting the sheath on the belt without removing the belt, and it offers several carry postion options. The "Tech-lock" belt fastener was designed by Bob Terzuola and Tim Wegner. Two dynamic guys.

Don - We should have sheaths in two weeks. Don't know prices yet, sorry, not my department.
