FBM is finally mine

I got home from work today and decided it was time to put my FBM to my belt sander. I grabbed a bucket of water and went to the basement with it. I am really happy that I finally grew a pair and did this. IT IS SHARP.

I know it is a very primitive attempt compared to some I have seen on these forums but I gave it my best. What do you all think? (be honest…I take criticism in a very positive way)

Finally for the very first time the FBM actually felt like it was mine.

that really takes a set. I still have not been able to make myself touch infi to sander. I have sharpened other knives on my 1x30.

All my infi has been hand convexed, which in the case of the FMMLE really took some time on sandpaper.

The nastiest sharpest edge of any knife I own, or have ever owned is on one I sharpened on the 1x30. It is my first home made knife, and I am really scared of the edge. I had a light bobble with it a while ago, and have a dead nerve in my right thumb, with stitches and long healing time as a result of a light touch (which hit the bone and severed the nerve).

One day I will use that sander on Infi, but not until I have had much more practice with keeping the tips looking nice and pointy.

looks great!!! i have a fbm le that i want to put a nice edge on,but im afraid to do it.

Did you do the satin finish or just the edge?

Either way it look awesome but I would like to see more of it.

Thanks a lot guys! It is a FBMLE and I only put the edge on it. Though over time and use I may go all the way to the top with it. I am taking baby steps with it. I would also like to get a much better belt sander/buffing wheel combo before I jump in.

Making a nice tip was always my problem with the belt sander. I finally figured out a way to do it a couple years ago.

Thanks again guys.

Yes, well done!! The FBM shape lends itself to convexing an edge on a sander....an Ash is even easier and was my first foray into using a sander on Infi. So long as you draw the knife away from the belt when you reach the point you won't end up with a rounded tip.

If I can offer some "tips" ( pun intended:D ) if you ever want to try doing a recurve...put some marker ink on the edge and practise the hand movements on a very light grit belt to begin with....checking for even ink removal before going to a heavy grit. This works well for those doing a standard edge as well.

If you want to progress to convexing sabre grinds or thinning a convex grind you can use the marker ink trick and draw lines along the edge of the blade to help with seeing you have a steady removal of steel which is balanced on both sides....this works really well. I learned this stuff from Horndog who has some great posts on this over on the Scrapyard Forum.

I am just practising now on my CS Khukri which I put a convex edge on to see what I need to do to thin the blade out slightly.... so that I can narrow the profile of the convex edge on my Zilla....Khukri's are the hardest shape I have done....but if you can do practise runs first on cheaper stuff it helps overcoming the worry of doing it on the expensive ones:thumbup:

Peter great point. I use a marker on my edges when going to the belt sander to make sure I am hitting the edge correctly. I think the FBM looks fine, did a pretty good job on it.

That looks like a very good edge to me! Esp for your first try!!!

Good work, and thanks for the pics:thumbup:
