FBM is finally mine

To test, hold it in a stream with leaves floating along. If it cuts a leaf in half, it's sharp. If the leaves avoid its edge, then it's scary sharp. :D

That's an awesome (and ballsy) sharpening job there. :)

Your avatar is so cute....I am sure Jennifer would hate the flash back to the "Big Hair" but very cute:)

Mr. Lycosa: I don't thinks so! Atleast I can sharpen my own now though.

grnamin: they avoided the edge...:D

Making a nice tip was always my problem with the belt sander. I finally figured out a way to do it a couple years ago.

Thanks again guys.

Kevin

This is a great job! How did you manage to make such a nice tip on it?

I only bring the tip over about half way at most across the belt and then pull straight away.

Oh and thank you.

Sometimes I will get to the tip and reverse back the other way. Sounds silly but it works for me. the tip was the last part that formed a burr when I did it.

Thanks for your reply. I believe it is similar to asking about driving without me getting behind the wheel. I have to give it a try. Nevertheless, what do you mean by saying that you bring the tip over about half way at most?

Basically you just do not want to slide the tip off of the belt while you still have any pressure applied. The belt will come forward as the tip is sliding off the side and round the tip off. That is what I figured after messing up a couple atleast. It may not be the best way to form a nice tip but it is what I have figured out.

Below is what I mean by bringing the tip over about half way.

Once you bring the tip across this much or less, you will figure out how far you need to go, pull the blade straight away from the belt.

I hope this is better. I was having a hard time describing it.

If you have a harbor freight tool store around you, it's a great way to get started on sanders and grinders on a budget. The tools are good, but not super heavy duty, and not the best. BUT great starter tools that will last a long time if you don't use them often.
ie..... house handy man quality, not machine shop quality

Mine is pretty worn out. Do you have any suggestions for a step up?

This is definitely clear now. I understand what you mean. Thanks for clarifying that for me. As for whether this is the best way to convex the tip, I believe that the result speaks for itself. What more can one possibly ask?

Take care.
