Feather Blade

I was inspired by all the different types of "kit" type knives that fit into tins and fire kits to try one of my own designs. It is essentially a 3" drop point blade forged from car spring steel with a short tab at the end instead of a tang for a handle.

From the end of the cutting edge to the end of the tab measures 1 1/4". The taper at the end of the spine is meant to push against the base of the thumb and the tab is meant to be pinched between the ring finger and thumb.

I'm still playing with the dimensions... maybe a shorter blade, a longer tab, a more rounded hollowed out section behind the cutting edge. I'm looking for a little feedback at this point. I've got a nice convex grind on it, and have cut up some veggies as a test for wet hand use. It seems pretty secure, but some of the ideas mentioned above might make it better.

Anyway... I'm looking for some feedback as to the practicality, etc. The whole idea was to have the blade of a full size knife in a small package. What do you think? Oh by the way, I call it the Feather Blade because I think it resembles one.

Perhaps some strategically placed patches of skateboard deck tape could help with the grip a little.

I actually really like it. I've got a couple of blades from el cheapo brand folders that have broken and I'll often throw them into a tin or fire kit and use them in much the same way you're holding the "feather". Safety considerations make me somewhat worried about using knives this way, but I would only ever use a knife of this type if I had lost my primary and secondary (and tertiary and quartenary if I'm carrying that many).

i use this one pretty often (made by siguy):

it takes a little getting used to, but after you figure it out, it isnt a whole lot different than a regular knife. seeing as yours is fairly similar, i would think that it would work pretty well.

I remember seeing the one that Simon made in an older thread. It looks like a great design.

I like that. Looks like a very useful blade, kind of a cross between an ulu and animal pelt processing blade.

I know it would throw off the intent and design but a lanyard hole would add to its retention, especially if you tied a pinky loop.

orrey45 beat me to it. I'd also suggest drilling a lanyard hole in the tab. Tie a piece of cord to wrap around your pinky or ring finger.

Nice work ... I could easily picture myself sitting in an emergency room missing a digit if I ever got to play with one of these  I'm not that dextrous :D

I think v2 will have a longer tab curled back on itself for a finger hole/lanyard attatchment. I'll take a little out of the blade length to make up the difference.
