Feather Damascus Fighter

really appreciate the extra trouble to post the other pictures, it's nice to see the knife's insides and how it went together:thumbup:

The process of a custom knife evolving can involve few or many contacts between the maker and customer. Last year I let Kyle know I would be interested in one of his JS test knives. I basically said I would like a fighter with W2 and walnut, and, since they were his test knives, stayed out of the way and let him do the rest.

When my order slot came up with Kyle, I knew I wanted another fighter, and I really have been impressed, like the rest of us, as to how quickly Kyle has adapted to forging damascus. So, a damsacus fighter with ivory was in order. When I went to Kyle's shop to discuss this, he had 9 blade profiles to inspect, and in short order we had a blade plan using his feather pattern. Around 9-inches with long clip, a few small additions which he mentioned. We discussed handle design and size (I have a large hand), discussed the amount of embellishment, etc. No filework, grooves at his discretion. And, in short order, had a plan. Then, he was consistent at keeping me up to date on the progress. Several e-mails, several pictures (some posted) including billet images and even Kyle in his yard chopping on the 2X4 test. So, even though there was some input and involvement on my part with this knife, I just wanted Kyle to know what an easy and painless process it was working with him.

I think Kyle is picking up sheath making as quickly as he has all of his other knifemaking skills. Looking forward to picking this package up over the weekend.

Thanks for a great knife, Kyle, and thanks for all the comments all! Plus, great images, Caleb!

KYLE, I really don't have any adjectives to add to this beautiful piece. All words of high praise have been used repeatedly and I would just be repeating them. However, ALL OF THE ABOVE my friend ! At your young age, what will the future hold for you and your imagination --- there seems to be no bounds for you. Looks like the good Lord has given you a great talent and you have put it to use. I believe you would excel in any artistic arena you chose to enter. Congratulations .................

Thanks for all the complements everyone!

I really like how this one came out.

I would also like to thank Joe for giving me the opportunity to make this knife and for giving a lot of good input in the design. Thanks Joe.

Thats not a knife it's a masterpiece!!! That is why I have one of Kyle's knives on order, although I will have to wait another 2 years.

Dang!

What he said!!!! I guess I don't comment on everything that gets posted... But this one is a stunner! Simple and ornate without a need for extra embellishment - dang, but would this one fit in my collection! Excellent work!

I can't add anything that hasn't already been said.
Kyle, your work is pretty amazing.

I failed to complement Caleb on his photo in my earlier post.
It's first rate.
I especially like how you always post a reduced image below the full size so we can
see the entire knife without scrolling. I hate that about portrait knife photos.

Kyle the you are putting out is fantastic your learning curve has been incredible

Great looking knife. I like the clip

I can not commend you enough for showing the testing that you did and I think that is great

OMG, that is FANTASTIC!!! That Mammoth ivory is off the hook amazing, as is your feather Damascus.

Thanks for all the kind words everyone! This is one of my favorites of the knives I've made.

Another exceptional knife Kyle. That feather damascus looks great as does the sheath.

Pleasure seeing it.

Peter

Second these sentiments. I'm not the greatest fan of bowies, but I love this one. Feather pattern is my favorite damascus. I must get a knife with this pattern. I also love the guard and sheath.

Just wanted to add that I picked this up at Kyle's over the weekend, and it is just a great custom knife. Looking at the images is one thing, but the final test is in hand, and Kyle came through with flying colors on all accounts. Love the knife, love the sheath, and great fit and feel in hand.

Kyle made this a great experience, from picking out the ivory at the Branson Hammer-in, to picking up the final product with detailed letter of authenticity. Really happy with your fighter, Kyle, and look forward to enjoying the WIP of your next custom on the forums.
