Feathersticks

Thin edges work best. Scandi grinds work well for me.

Also, don't beat your self up about the stick part. Feather sticks and bundles of feathers are great for taking pictures and it is a good test of your skills and of a knife's geometry but a pile of them are still a good fire starter. I sometimes challenge myself to make pretty feather sticks but when I am in the woods trying to start a fire I just make a pile of feathers/shavings. ;)

Try getting a longer stick next time. Make longer curls, this will help you focus on holding your knife edge at a consistent angle as it's traveling down the stick. You'll be amazed how you can make left hand curls, right hand curls and straight curls that resemble a wood fruit roll up, all in the adjustment of your knife angle! Making these longer curls will show you your mistakes and always whittle at the peaks of the previous cuts!

Yes, long curls are harder to do. The wood used is a big factor. Some wood lends itself to curls much better
