Feburary Contest Discussion Thread

Man I was gonna make an awesome hammock out of some ripstop nylon, but then I went and re-read the "rules" ;) Now I'm gonna have to do something a little different.

Man I wish I could use my sewing machine :D

Nope, no sewing machine, but you can still bake and do the dishes, Sally. Maybe your husband would like to enter in the contest with you.

:D

DAMN IT!! I'm baking you cookies Mother funkmaster!!!!! :D

I'll ask him if he wants to :P

Hopefully there is no pics of banana hammocks with 2 buddies in it. Don't have a lot of free time outside work, how bout steel and chain hammock? Lol actually made one outta burlap there a few years ago on an 18hr shift.

I'll take steel and chain. Metal is synthetic in my eyes, and that's legal in this challenge.

Show me what you got, Burlap.

Maybe it is just late, or maybe I am just stupid, but can we use both synthetic and natural materials?

Hammocks are universal. I slept in the back of a van in one on a road trip once. Natural or sythetics, good with me.

Improvising and making a hammock to sleep in, might need to happen in the woods or in a building. Innovative thoughts and outside the box thinking is a more useful tool when we aren't limited to the "norm".

Here the "norm" would be the woods, but folks live in cities too.

I would make two if it were me, one out of natural material, and one out of synthetic and try each out in their natural enviornments.

Urban skills need to be exercised too.

Just thinking that meself. I have 20 hrs of jack to do in the next two days at work. Is it possible to use two different peoples' help for two different hammocks?

i'm tempted to enter this...

i know that a mayan style family hammock has *2 miles* of cordage. that's a lot.

it takes a skilled weaver about one week to make a hammock.

got the skills? time? materials?

go for it.

i might ;)

You got until the end of the month, Murph, find a couple of days when you and LadyNuge can get your hammock on.

Try to enjoy the challenges, instead of treating them as a house chore.

:D

Oh, yeah I didn't mean to imply it was tedious work. I just meant for an urban type environment, work would be a good choice. Trust me once I tell her about this challenge I'll never hear the end of it.

We got some folks that are reading.

We got some folks that aren't reading.

:D

When you see it, you'll see it.

this one is something that EVERYONE can do, if you want.

This is a Beckerhead Only contest

Just curious, I don't have my BH number, but just getting clarification can I get in on this?

Wow, I'm really lucky here. As you guys know, I'm pretty damn skinny, and I have this anorexic friend... :D

Now that would just be mean. But anyways, it's gonna be fun.

Chameleonbear, if you have your BH# by the time the contest closes, you're gtg. If you don't well, you can post pics, but I don't think you're gonna win anything :D

By the way I understand it, the first part "everyone can do it" is meant in reply to last month's contest involving snow, which left a lot of Beckerheads out because of their location/climate. This month's contest is one in which Everyone regardless of climate can do...as long as they're a Beckerhead.

but that's just how I interpeted it...I've been wrong before LOL

Ok, I finally re-read the rules. That was challenging, what do I win?

No, really I finally get what I'd skipped over before. S'all good!

Its all in the contest rules.

If you don't have your number, you can enter. If you get your number before the contest closes, you're a valid entry. If you don't, you ain't.

I said everyone can do it, because we don't have to rely on the weather to cooperate, you don't have to have woods, shit like that.

I hear people complain that they don't live near woods, or they can't go outside and play, stuff like that. If you have or will have a BH# and you don't enter, then you didn't want to enter in the first place.

I have to bow out :(

I was looking forward to taking a shot at this but my plans for the next two weekends have changed. For both weekends I'll be going up north to the Ishinomaki area. I live near Yokosuka and will be going up to do a little bit of relief / repair work and delivering supplies in one of the areas that was devastated by the earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan last year (eleven months ago yesterday). Samaritans Purse, along with many other organizations, has been up there since the disaster. This will be my second trip, my first was over Columbus Day weekend in October. When I was there in October I had the chance to drive around and take some pictures of the area. I have some pictures in a set in my flickr account. October was 7 months after the earthquake, and there still was destruction every where. I'm hoping over the next two weekends I'll be able to make a small difference and help some people who need it.

On a side note: My 14 and 2 will both be going with me. My 9 will to if it arrives in time.

not a problem, I just wasn't sure how it would work... I doubt I will have my number by then. Even though I want it, I doubt it. I might do it anyway cause it does sound like a fun exercise.

Now that the contest is over, I just wanted to say thanks for the challenge. I learned alot of "do's" and "don'ts" on this months challenge. I am going to try out one of my "home-made" hammocks on my next overnight trip. :)
