they lost a small sebenza the day after it shipped to another forumite. never bothered to notify anyone. they said they had the package, but the contents were missing.

i shipped that sucker in the original crk box, wrapped that box, then put in another box and taped very securely.

sure, the tape fell off, the inards fell out, no one saw or bothered to pick it up, then the threw the box in the back of a truck. riiiiigght!

now i have to jump through hoop with insurance forms and wait several weeks for a reply.

send ups, usps, whatever. AVOID FED EX AT ALL COSTS!!!!!

It's my experience that UPS basically never pays on insurance claims. Not sure where that leaves us but I don't recommend shipping via UPS. Sorry about your Fedex experience... :(

I too have had "issues" with UPS. Knock on wood, never an issue yet with FedEx. Sorry you have to deal with all the BS.

I've experienced theft by UPS employees before . . . UPS contacted the company I made the purchase from, saying that they found the box had been opened and emptied while in their possession. Company contacted me, and told me that a replacement was being shipped.

unfortunately this was being sent as a trade, so the recipient loses out on what he wanted, i am sending back what i rec'd, and i have to wait to see what they decide re insurance claim.

not the first neg experience i have had with fed ex.

not to mention a like new sebenza is probably in the pocket of someone who has no appreciation of what it is.

Question for you Morimotom - Did anything in your shppr. or recip. address make it obvious that this was a knife or anything similar? Such as, for example: To: John Doe, Dover Knife Co.

I always recommend that everyone avoid this like the plague. Use an acronym if you need to, such as John Doe, DKC for the above.

Also, for the FedEX boxes, tape over the easy peel strip, tape the airbill pouch down even though it has adhesive, and write the airbill number on the box separate from the airbill itself, with the date shipped next to it. With this, even if the airbill and pouch get separated from the box they can find the needed info from the a/b # written on the box.

Your packaging sounds more than adequate and is what I recommend also. Try if possible, to use boxes that are at least the size of the small FedEX box. Avoid the real small usps priority mail ones that'll fit a vhs tape in.

Avoid shipping on Fri for Mon or later delivery. Ship Thursday for Fri delivery or wait until Mon.

Good luck with your claim,
EricO

Thankfully, only problem I have ever encountered with USPS is a priority package from Louisiana to Texas that took about 5 weeks, but it still got there. I have sent to Australia, Singapore, Italy and Canada with USPS and never a single issue.

Actually, they all suck, but what other choice do we have other then traveling to the Buyer/Seller and hand delivering the item in person?

I have been working for a gunsmith since I retired in '95. We have shipped 1000s of firearms by UPS and not one has been lost. We have made claims for damage and in every case we received payment. Of course, we had to jump through all the hoops, but since we are dealing with guns, we tons of documentation.

Don't let FedEx get away with it. They always try to worm out of paying at first. If you press the issue, they will probably cave in.

hey eric, no indications on the box it was a knife, generic brown cardboard. box was about 8x6x6, med-large. shipping label was a sticker, no evelope or plastic bag type thing.

i am not running any type of business so ship when it is convenient or to accomodate another trader. dont know what an airbill is.

thx for the advice but ill stick with usps or ups if someone asks for it. sometimes slow, but ive never lost anything or had anything damaged by usps.

oh i'll press!!! guarantee it. too much at stake.

Give Fed-Ex a chance before you write them off. The only time I ever had to make a claim with Fed-Ex they handled it quickly and professionally.

my biggest issue is that the package was opened, the contents presumably removed, and no attempt to contact me was made....10 days later. they had the outer packaging with the addresses.

im upset mainly because it appears the knife was taken. why would they have the outer box, not the contents? no one saw the package get smashed/crushed if it was an accident? if they picked up the outer, why leave the contents?

seems to be a series of either negligent or criminal acts.

I've never had anything lost by USPS, except when somebody shipped something they shouldn't have by "Media Mail", and only once had a package extensively damages in transit--and that was poorly-packaged. My main problem with USPS is I've never seen their tracking/receipt system actually provide any tracking information.

Your best bet, IME, is real FedEx, nothing less than "2nd Day." But that's kinda pricy.

heres a pic with the manufacture date, april 29, 2003. i will be watching the auction sites.

I have shipped a few hundred knives with FedEx, no problems.

FedEx Costs more.

I mostly shipped in the CONUS.

A few all over the world.

Sorry for your loss.

All shipping should be done via USPS. Period. I'm not saying that because they're paying for my school and bills either. I've worked there for about a year and have more confidence than ever with using the shipping services. Everything is well taken care of, and mostly, priority and first class parcels are handled on automated equipment where they're not likely to be tampered with. The only handling done would be at the station where you drop it off, and the delivery by carriers. I've shipped SOOO many packages and never had trouble. Express is the shit if you can afford it. Gets out very quick. Handled completely separate than all other mail. And surprisingly, first class is sorted with priority (though at the end of the sort run) and will get there as fast sometimes. It's all in the value and time frame of what you're shipping.
