Off Topic Feeding The Need : Your Strategy !

If I had to base the decision at my current knife owning and using point; I would get a SAK almost immediately and then ponder spending the rest of the money assuming I had it in my pocket and not waiting for loose money to appear. My preferences would be for a middle of the road folder $-wise within a month of buying the SAK and then I would choose the fixed blade. I am not obsessed with just spending the money quickly as it depends on my current need. Am I going camping? Hiking? or is it normal day to day life?

Since I have no knives to start with, I would take the 600 all at once. With no horses in the stable I could spend that amount rather quickly.

$150 on a fixed
$150 on a work folder
$250 on a casual folder
$50 on a Sharpmaker

Hey they never said our sharpening equipment got vapourized too!

I would have to decide between two options.

1 buying a 600$ Shamwari outright

Or

2 Buying a good condition used CRK off the forum and a Spyderco Pikal which would probably have to be bought new since they don’t turn up on used market ever.

Or I could always buy a used cqc7 and spend the rest investing in dope to slang. :poop: I would become the biggest Jenkem dealer this side of the atlantic.

Street name: Leroy Jenkems.

Since I know what I would buy with the money. I would spend the full $600 on 2-$300 knives from the exchange. It would take a little bit of bargain hunting to manage it, but certainly possible. These 2 would cover all I needed.

:) Thanks to all posters ! Very interesting . You can tell a lot about a person by their answer .

Your sharpening equipment didn't "vaporize " and I meant this to be mostly about your personal discretionary pleasure knives . So maybe your essential kitchen knives are still there . But no repurposing . They stay in the kitchen for food prep !

And , none of that dang organ trading or other nefarious budget enhancement .

Your replies have made me think further about simply replacing my favorites vs trying something different . I'm fairly sure I'd at least start out with one of my old tried and true .

I'd buy a plane ticket and hunt you down for making me choose!:p

In all seriousness, it's really tough, since you don't know what might be coming out later. So it's a tug of war between replacing old favorites or waiting for new arrivals. I think I would replace my Morrf-5 and get a R1D2 for work, set the 200$ aside. (I might change my opinion once I get the Reate JACK, so it might be the JACK getting replaced)
So basic answer: As quickly as possible replace my current favorite knife, get a budget user, leave a portion off to the side.

I had $50 left over after buying the three knives I wanted so I got a new sharpener:)

Spending it quickly doesn’t necessarily indicate obsession. Some of us just know what we want.
Camping, hiking or day to day life, I’m covered with what I chose. I’ve been using knives long enough that the choices were automatic.

Exactly, replace your known gems first. You can try something new next year when you get another $600. :D

Well, to be honest about it, I'm pretty settled in my preferences. Something new might come out that grabs you, hence leave a bit of a fund for that potential event. I purchased a Benchmade Mini Presidio II on impulse and I really like this knife. If I didn't have so many, it would be in my pocket now.... just sayin'.

I don't think I have a dollar sign on my phone so can we make it £600 please?

I would spend the lot in a day and buy lots of knives and tools and set myself up for many years to come.

Victorinox Huntsman £40
Leatherman Wave £90
Enzo Trapper 115 ffg 12c27 £88
Marttini fillet knife £25
Condor Eco Parang £50
Cold steel special forces shovel with sheath £35
Silky big boy £70 ish
£100 left over for some sharpening stuff

It happens to all of us when we first get into knives. Every knife that looks cool we feel like we need it. It takes a while to figure out what we really want in a knife.

I would not buy any new knives from the dealer. I would spend the $600 here on the exchange to get the most out of my $600.

1x $350 sebenza or other high end mid tech on the exchange
2 $100 used knives from the change that I was patient with finding (retail value probably $300-$350)
1x $50 knife on the exchange (retail value $80-$90)

I would do some searching and keep checking the exchange as deals become available. once I know what I am looking for I JUMP on that when it comes up.

Now come the important part..YOU WONT LOSE ANY MONEY! I can always sell or trade those knives for something else as I desires and likes change. I am not limited to just a few knives for $600. for the entire year. I can buy-sell-trade as often as I like. Do I want a different pattern? Different steel? Different maker? That is the beauty of this site. Thanks Blade Forums!

Yes , so long as exchange rate isn't too far off . And I'd abolish the VAT , just for you , if I could . :p:thumbsup:

For all you unfortunates that must pay much increased prices compared to the USA , you get a bonus budget to compensate and make things equal .;)

1. $450 - Small Sebenza 21 crosshatch
2. $85 - Spyderco Chaparral LWT
3. $35 - Mora Kansbol
4. $30 - Gentleman Jack

solved!

Point taken:)

If I found myself totally knifeless (kitchen knives excluded) I would probably take $2-300 and go out locally to try to get a good fixed blade and probably a fairly simple Victorinox locally, and if I don't find anything really worthy, I'd buy a Mora to hold me over (might buy one anyway). Rest would then be spent ordering a real EDC folder and maybe a a blade for a fixed blade to finish myself.

Large CR Sebenza, a nice custom Buck 110, SAK Farmer, whatever left over of the funds Opinel No. 8

I am more practical than impulsive on knives, so I will first buy a knife I need on a daily basis.
For me it will be a small inkosi.

As I use larger knives during the week end I will pick up a PM2 in S110V soon after the inkosi, or even with it to save some cash on the shipping costs.

This shall be enought for my first year.
