I know most of you guys are in the same boat as me, you know coming to this forum and opening our wallets to the latest temptations of expensive blades. I was no different, starting with many spyderco's and finally working my way up to my first sebenza. However, a week ago I picked up a kershaw skyline abd it has been in my pocket ever since. My question is are any of you going through the same feeling? Lately I've been noticing cheaper EDC driven blades are becoming more and more adequite for a smaller price. Am I going crazy or what? Long story short I have knives ranging up to $400 and I'm still carrying a $30 knife I got at walmart over everything I own. Share your stories.

Hi Robot Mania Fu -

I have carried my Acies since I bought it

The only time I do not have my Acies with me is when I am going somewhere where a 4" blade is not permitted or where I don't want to risk losing the Acies.

I still have all my Kershaws, and still love them, I just don't take them out much anymore.

best regards -

mqqn

I'll take that a step further and say I get a great sense of satisfaction carrying a few specific knives because they defy their street price with more value than I feel I paid for them, significantly sometimes. Nailing an affordalbe folder design that does that to me must face at least a small level of luck since so many awesome production and custom folder makers don't nail it every time. It seems to be a synergy of some sort for those knives because the subtlest elements about them can make or break the knife for me. And I mean nuances, not the basic tip up/tip down, thumb studs/Spyder Hole, etc. elements of a folder. Subtle things that even the more expensive knives may not have . . . Although higher in cost than the Skyline, because this is a relative subject, my Spyderco Gayle Bradley can't seem to be displaced by anything I have right now. Not for long anyway. And I have a pretty nice choice of EDC's. Hell of a knife for a buck and a quarter. There are a few others that offer me that same sense of happiness when I carrry them.

I know what you mean. I started with Spydercos and bought a small Sebenza a few years ago. But I realized 99.9% of my EDC needs could be handled by a Buck 55 or a SAK. I think there's just as much beauty and craftsmanship in a Buck 110 (what, $30 at Walmart?) as there is in a Sebbie.

I love my Caly, but it gets carried less than a knives costing 1/3 its price. I still really appreciate the nicer blades, I just don't feel a need to carry them for some reason. YMMV

same way my 30 to 60 dollars knives get carried more than my plus 100 dollar knives just because well i am thirteen and worked hard and forever to get those knives but i do carry my strider sng

I'm not sure if it's moving back wards or just enjoy carrying and using knives in general.

Just days ago I was walking with Gerber EVO clipped right smack next to an Umnumzaan for 3 or 4 days with a Case (Food Knife)6254SS full size Trapper riding shotgun. :)

BTW before this, I also EDCed the Skyline for about 6 months straight. What a Great Knife.

Don't look at it as moving "backwards" but as experiencing and enjoying more of what this hobby has to offer. I can find some degree of satisfaction in carrying any of my knives, regardless of cost. I might carry a Sebenza one day, a Douk Douk the next...

I know what you mean, I buy great knives because they are cool and I like the materials.
Lately I sold all my SNG's and have been carrying a 20$ mini fixed blade, I really don't cut that much, maybe some velcro and opening a few boxes so this knive will do.

Many people won't or can't understand that statement, but I do. I too am going through a 'change of life' as I re-evaluate what true value in a knife really means. Thanks for putting your thoughts into words.

I am experiencing the adverse effect actually. I still enjoy my cheaper knives, by cheaper not in functionality, but just materials. Although lately I have just been really enjoying the premium materials more expensive blades have to offer.

I understand a swap meet knife could probably get 99.9% of our tasks done, but obviously if we spend time on a forum dedicated to cutting tools we are beyond just the swap meet knife.

Love my tenacious, saks, ka-bar dozier lg, delica, leek, dragonfly...etc.

But lately have been really enjoying the tier quality of CRK Sebenza sm & lg, Spyderco Sage 2 & Caly 3 CF, BM 710 &940.

Both sides are carried and often combined to get full usage of my collection. But as a growing knife enthusiast I enjoy the higher end of the knife spectrum. ;]

Know what you are saying.I have brought and used higher end knives , but at present happy using a new model victorinox soldier. Maybe have reached full circle ? Still got small colection of spydercos, benchmades ,zt etc. Its a very boyant thing this knife intrest/ hobby. Maybe attitudes change with the seasons . ONLY KIDDING HAVE FUN FARON

Well, aren´t there different points?

The knife you really need, the knife you feel to need and the knife you enjoy.

Reason, feelings and fun.

I don´t really need more than a SAK too, but feel the need for a solid blade and knife (that means it should be a small fixed or folding with a secure lock). I don´t feel comfort with a SAK Blade.

I enjoy the grip of all my higher priced knifes over the grip of a SAK. I enjoy the compact and versatility of a SAK Farmer too. I found my compromises.

As a summary of how knife - gusto develops: Simplicity is the key! The more simple a knife is made and works perfectly, the longer you personaly carriy it over the years or decades of your live and the longer it is a bestseller on market. Just my thoughts.

Yep, I started with a gerber paraframe.
Then I got a Delica 4, which started the mania :D
Then I got Sebenzas, xm-18s, customs, strider....
Lately I carry a new Delica flat grind in green, or my boker trance.
They are light, easy to use, comfortable in the pocket and to my mind.
It isn't such a huge deal if you lose or damage a $50 knife as a $400+ knife, at least to me :D

Same here, except I've gone back to my Caly 3s (but I do lust after a G10 D4). For me, I think it's just that after trying everythng I wanted to try, including Sebenzas, Striders, and customs, I'm more focused on what I want a knife to do and which knife feels and performs best to me in doing those things.

I've carried sebenzas. Now I either carry a $20 victorinox soldier or a $7 Opinel. I'm happy. Maybe I'll sell off my collection (and start over). Anybody want to buy a NIB micro dyad in black pearl? I bought it because it looked like a really nice little knife (and it is), but why? I won't use it, so it's in the safe.

While customs are out of my budget I have carried some nicer Spydercos and Benchmades. But it's a Boker stockman in carbon and delrin than always finds its way into pocket. Go figure.

I've been packing in the last 4 years a 4 inch blade, fixed blade that I haven't carried since I was in my early teens.
It was a gift from my Grandfather, it's a stainless steel of an unknown type because it was a cheap knife of the time period with no markings or tang stamp anywhere on it.
It was a bear to get sharp till I reprofiled it.
The funny part is this knife started me, in my early teens, on reprofiling a blade without anyone showing or telling me what or why you need to do this to blades for time to time.
The hasn't just been a great tool (user EDC), it was a learning tool too.

when i was a youngster (early 80s), the Buck 110 was THE knife to have. as a matter of fact any Buck was a prized posession, and i carried them along with a SAK through my teens. i ve always been a hunter, and a gun guy so it was a match made in heaven. then i turned 21 and started buying/carrying a handgun(legally of course) and with my handguns came the push for the Benchmades, Spydercos, etc. the Bucks got put up or let go regretfully to help with fundage to purchase these pricier knives, and the high end Benchmades became my favorite folders. i always did have a 110 though, and did continue to carry a SAK daily. as of late though ive realized the Bucks are still made to the high standard they always were, and ive been bitten by the "old school" bug. ive let a few BMs go, and have gotten back into the Bucks, yet it doesnt feel like a step backward in quality, more like a step back in time. so yes, im going back to my roots and dont regret it a bit. there simply isnt much "prettier" than a Buck with polished brass imo.

I get just as much satisfaction using an inexpensive knife as I do an expensive knife.

As long as it's well made I don't care how much it cost. I'm carrying a $35 Gerber today because it has a low ride clip and that's what I wanted for today.
