Feeling frustrated with the Sharpmaker

Thank you all for the info and tips.

I started all over again (in the meantime, since my last sharpmaker experience, my knives got really dull). I grabbed a short 4” knife, a sharpie, a 10x loupe and lots of patience.

For starters, when I inspected the edge of the knife with the loupe, I realized that it had a few nicks. I marked the edge with the sharpie and started to sharpen the knife with the diamond rods at a 30 degree angle. It took me away over 20 passes to get rid of those nicks (I actually lost count, but I guess it was more than 100 on each side). I finally got rid of the nicks but the sharpie revealed two knew problems:

- I’m getting a double edge near the tip of the blade (it starts to show up at about 3/8” from the tip)
- I’m not managing to get the first 1/2” of the blade sharpened. I try to start as close as possible to the very beginning of the edge, but that first 1/2” still stays dull.

I’m waiting for advice on these 2 problems to move on to the brown rods.

Thanks.

It sounds like the base of the edge is of a different angle from the tip. The tip isn't a problem since you are still sharpening it (unless you don't like the look). The base is the problem. You might what a few more passes just at the base to get to the edge. Other members more experience with this might charm in.

By the way, when using the diamond rods, don't push too hard. It won't sharpen faster and you might scrap the diamond dust off the rods, shortening their life.
