Had to travel by plane for work and elected not to check bags so now I'm wandering around feeling very naked without my usual pocket knife... I didn't realize that I would feel so odd, so NAKED, without a blade on me... Strange? Probably not for this forum...

Well you know that gives you the perfect excuse to look up the local blade pusher while you're there and grab a new one. Then it's just a $6 Priority Mail box to get it home. You have to find the silver lining.

Bigfatts! Thanks for the great advice! Hadn't thought of this is a shopping opp! Flying home in the morning though so don't have much time to shop and then ship. It sucks that airlines are now charging to check-on bags...

Not strange at all.

I often travel for work, and I feel a little awkward each time I get dressed and I don't have a knife.

Exactly what thought before opening the thread.

This helps me on my trips to the airport. At least can be used as a defensive striking weapon.

Doesn't cut worth a flip though. Been through Houston, LAX, Heathrow, Zambia, Ecuador, Vienna, Odessa Ukraine, and Canada (and a few places I can't remember) and never has raised an eyebrow.

Most of the time when I travel by air it is to destinations that aren't knife friendly so checking baggage doesn't help me much. I usually carry an old Leatherman when I'm doing that so it looks more like a tool than a weapon.

We have a trip scheduled later in the summer to a destination where the blade limit is 3"! I haven't decided what to carry yet but I only have a couple of things that qualify. I'm thinking with such a restrictive limit they might also not appreciate assisted opening folders and I don't want to draw attention to myself with a pocket clip. I may just stick with the old Leatherman PST, or carry my new Leatherman Juice but it will be in a checked bag along with my dangerous large bottle of shampoo and my spray deodorant.

Im about to take a trip and there will be a new Speed Bump waiting for me upon arrival thanks to USPS:)

Then off to another city with a 3" limit (another reason to buy another knife, 3"s aren't usually in my vocabulary):(

The Speed Bump will get mailed back home, where there is no carry limit :)

USPS first class is $3 :)

I carry one of these on my keys as well for this exact reason. I find that when I can carry a knife, I don't really need one on my keychain as I usually have 2 others in my pockets. The little Leatherman is TSA safe so I don't have to worry about forgetting I have it. Combine with my little Fenix ld01 and 5' of paracord in the form of a lanyard, the Leatherman ps style definitely eases my nerves when I can't carry a knife.

As for the cities with the 3 inch rule. Does it really matter if you don't walk around flashing your blade no one will know it's over 3 inches. Hell I've been walking around with less than 3 inches in my pants all my life and nobody knows cause I never flash it.

lol. nicely done

Wow, I was just talking about this. I am on a trip right now. 3 days so far without a knife and I hate it. Feeling naked and just plain awkward. I can't wait to get home. I'll probably carry 2 or 3 for awhile, lol

I thought you could not even get nail clippers on a plane, I dont think they are going to allow a leatherman multi tool. Even if it is in your carry on suit case I dont think it is allowed, but I really have know idea. Unless you mean it is in the checked baggage claim luggage, then I could see were it would be fine.

That specific leatherman is fine to carry on a plane. They've loosened some of the stupid restrictions in the last few years (while adding just as many more stupid provisions), now you can get away with nail clippers as far as i know.

What is the name of this specific leather man tool, and why is it allowed.

leatherman ps, its TSA compliant (not approved) but it should pass through ok.... not sure if itll fly international however
why is it allowed? theres no knife first and foremost... just pliers, tiny scissors, nailfile/screwdriver, tweezers & carabiner clip/bottle opener :)

i rarely fly nowadays, last time i flew was several years ago but the same applies to court houses and some federal/state buildings i visit from time to time.

That is interesting although I could still see were this would be taken, or would have to be placed in a bag, which would have to be placed in a billion others bags, but these regulations are fine by me if they actually work, and keep people safe.

I flew international today no checked bags and I could have used a trusty blade a cople of times already. I feel your pain.

you can "carry on" this and once it raises the eyebrows of tsa agents you can state it isnt a knife and have them inspect it... its solely up to the tsa agents discretion whether its a weapon or not but should pass through as it is compliant with the rules. they are also fairly cheap $12-$15 and easily replaced if confiscated (imo, its worth the risk and peace of mind). ive never had a problem with it at the court house and have even received remarks such as "cool!".

edit: attached is a photo of my courthouse/tsa keychain and pen :). i'll carry this in conjunction with my wallet, cellphone, attache and/or bag. last time i flew i also carried a mini maglite.
