Feeling the Lava.

For about 6 months now, I've been feeling the Lava. There are two reasons I haven't picked one up:

1. Stainless/pinned construction.
2. Price.

Now that its being discontinued, I'm feeling this more and more, it looks like a great little user.

Does anyone know of plans to make this with FRN or G10 in the future, or should I just snap one up now? I saw a mod a while back with un-lined G10 and liked it much better, wish Spyderco would produce this.

Are there reasons why I might not want one, other than the listed ones? I never had the chance to handle one.

It's a very comfortable knife to hold, and I like the blade/handle ratio. I can't get a good grip on something the size of, say, a Ladybug, but don't always want or need a full-size blade. The Lava is a good compromise. I don't really like the shape of the blade, though. Now, if it had a Cricket style serrated reverse-S...

Snap it up. Once you try this little knife you'll be amazed at how you got along without it. :D

Blade shape and handle ergos go hand in hand on this knife. My only complaint is it's SS, so I can't take it apart, and it's tip up carry.

Even though the Lava is SS, it still grips your hand well, due to the incredible ergos. I traded and sold off all my smaller knives and kept the Lava. Don't hold out for an FRN or G10 model. There are no immediate plans for either. If you find a good deal on one, do not hesitate to get it. It's an awesome little blade.

It's one of my favorite knives, out of all my spydies and custom knives. Just fits the hand like a glove.

I am in the same boat, I do not like stainless handled Spydercos, but I love the Lava. The ergonomics make up for the handles and then some. It also has very good jimping on the choil area, so you have a great secure grip. You should really try one out before they are gone.

+1 on the not liking stainless handled Spydercos

+1 In general. ;)

The Lava is the best SS Spyderco bar the ATR. To make the SS worth the weight and slickness you have to have exceptional ergos on a smaller, or larger lightened, knife.

Grip tape is a well known modification for slick Spydies. With good results.

I have a Scorpius, also all stainless. Its a slick little blade. If its the same designer as the Lava, I say do it!

The Lava was designed by Chad Los Banos. The only collaboration with him and Spyderco.
The Scorpius is an Eric Glesser design.

i believe i read in a post by sal a few months back that there are no plans for a g-10 or frn production lava.

You are correct Chuck. I was in that discussion myself. :D
I'd love a G10 or FRN Lava.

The Lava is not going to be produced in FRN or G-10 (unless and until, down the road, there becomes enough interest to make a Sprint Run economically viable---and this would take several years, if ever, in my opinion). The Lava is a great little knife and performs far out of proportion to its size. If you decide you absolutely have to get a G-10 version, pop over to STR's forum here in the Maker's section and check out what he has done with the Lava (micarta and G-10 conversions). I have several Lavas, but the one that I used in this video--
