Im stuck between the fehrman shadow scout and peacemaker. Im needing, or wanting a new hunting blade, out of cpm3v. Fehrman seems to be the best choice. I just need help deciding which one to get. Any one used these to skin and gut any animals? I have my elk hunt coming up in september, then my deer hunt in november. Which one would be the better slicer? They are the same thickness. Thanks for the help.

I am an avid outdoorsman and I loved my Shadow Scout. Perfect ergos, weight, thickness, and a real beaty with that green linen micarta. I wish I had never sold it, but I really needed $$$ at the time. If you do a search...you will be able to find a review I did on the Shadow Scout. Either way you can't go wrong!

Thats what im thinking too. But I have used longer blades before. Up to around 5 1/2 inches. I was thinking about getting a bark river canadian special in 3v, but I read such good things about fehrman and their heat treat. Everyone says their edge holding is great. So I think I have it narrowed down to these two. Just seeing what people have to say.

So how is the blade profile on these? Is it thick, or a somewhat good slicer? I cant really tell in the you tube videos.

One of the guys who reviews on youtube and has lots of other knives is a member here, you should send him a quick pm and ask. I believe its 3/16 inch think, which might be considered a little too thick by some, but I'm sure it'd work fine. I'd say go with the peace maker because I'm currently looking for a shadow scout :)

I know you are set on CPM 3V but my Dozier YPS is about the best hunting knife I've ever owned.I know that sounds a little funny coming from a guy who makes knives but I only work with forging steels and I like something more stainless sometimes.

Thanks for the reply. I really like the looks and sound of dozier d2. But I need something tougher thats why im going with 3 v. Im just curious how good these knives actually cut, i have bought some knives that didnt cut worth a crap, to thick edges. Needed a complete reprofile before they cut decent.

What do you do with a hunting knife that is too tough for D2? Just curious.

You ever use a rock to baton your knife through a pelvic bone? I have many times. Oh and the breast bone. Just an old school way my dad used to do things. A saw might work but sometimes all you have is your knife. I would just rather have a 3v knife, i have seen how tough my little fehrman through hiker is. Besides this knife is basically a survival knife when your out that far too. I usually have 2 fixed blades on me, and a folder clipped on my pocket. But these fehrmans are really impressive.

Never! And I would venture to say there is no steel available that wouldn't have at least a chipped edge after that kind of use. Buy a hatchet or a pocket saw and save the Fehrman for knife related tasks.

My hrlm held up just fine with my last deer. Done it for years, and will never change. I just know that fehrman can handle it better after what i put mine through. Besides, im not carrying a hatchet all day in my pack. Like I said, an old school way of doing things, my dad used his buck 110. It just wore out after a couple years, but held up well. After the abuse I did to my through hiker, im confident it will handle just about everything I can throw at it. Thats what a heavy duty blade is all about anyway. I dont buy the strongest and toughest steel just to cut open my mail, or make fuzz sticks. My knives are used hard in the outdoors. Skinning, gutting and just working heavy on animals, cutting bone if I have to. Just looking for recommendations on which of these will be best for a hunting blade. Im thinking of just going with the peace maker. Thanks.

this is from the 3v datesheet on crucibles web site

"CPM 3V is a high toughness, wear-resistant tool steel made by the Crucible Particle Metallurgy process. It is designed to provide maximum resistance to breakage and chipping in a high wear-resistance steel. It offers impact resistance greater than A2, D2, Cru-Wear, or CPM M4, approaching the levels provided by S7 and other shock resistant grades. CPM 3V is intended to be used at 58/60 HRC in applications where chronic breakage and chipping are encountered in other tool steels, but where the wear properties of a high alloy steel are required."

there are also videos on the internet where 3v knives are used to baton through wood and concrete and pry nailed together boards apart, as well as cut through sheet metal. all without chipping or any major damage to the blade that a quick cleaning and sharpening couldnt fix.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dPgSOQY4CDk&feature=player_embedded this is a monkeyedge.com video on the strider DB in 3v. 3" blade at .19" thickness CPM-3v. all i could say is WOW when it was over.

i want a knife in this steel BAD and am also considering the fehrman peace maker as a fixed blade. Im really waiting on the spyderco TUFF just because i think it rediculous to make a folder in this steel.... im much more of a folder fan than a fixed blade fan.
The one thing that makes me upset is that when crucible set out to make s30v it was originally intended to be a STAINLESS version of 3v... then they got caught up in edge retention and bam todays s30v without the 3v properties :-(. Stainless 3v would be AMAZING.... but ill settle for almost stainless as it has TWICE the chromium of M4 and over 2 times as tough with d2-s30v edge retention. yeah ill take that any day.

you sir, ventured the wrong direction with your comments :-P

as much as i like the peace maker... the Last Chance is also a great looking knife with a bit more length too it. Best of luck on your choice!

just saw your review, very nice video.... but looking at fixed blades really makes me go back to wanting to wait for the spyderco tuff in 3v. i just think its going to be a badass little knife lol. i have zero use for a fixed blade at this time.

I would vote for the Shadow Scout. I have used mine a good bit and it performed admirably!!!! Haven't hit it with a rock, but wouldn't be afraid to either..

It seems to be the best steel I have seen, my hrlm chipped on a piece of metal i cut with my through hiker in 3v. Im also anxiously waiting on the tuff.

I have the Peace Maker and have used it on Whitetail with ease. I would suggest the Shadow Scout probably in this situation though, you would get the same benefits plus a little more flexibility using it in camp.

i just hope that a steel company realizes one day what a stainless version of 3v would be like in folding knives. EPIC
