Fehrman Peace Maker

Okay, that's it. Quiet Storm, you and mikemck and I need to pool our money and order a Final Judgement and a Battle Mistress, scrape up some scrap lumber, cardboard, fresh tomatoes, and Advil and take turns with all of them until we drop!
:D
Now, mikemck is in Texas, and I'm in Texas, and you're in Heidelberg, so how about we split the difference and meet in Louisiana? ;)

Edited to add: Getting back to the original post, congratulations on a neat knife!

Well, hold on. Mentioning Busse should be no problem, and really, some of these threads get pretty boring without some heat.
I don't like Busse's anymore, and it's because they just don't work for me, and they are all the same knife except for lengh, pretty much.

I like Fehrman though, for several reasons.

The fit & finish does not leave me feeling like I paid too much for some slappged together package, like quite a number of high priced knives have, no names named.
The micarta slabs are attached with screws, not pinned.
The balance is perfect, for me...Just enough heft to be reassuring.
The Peace Maker slices & dices extremely well.
The coating is nice, although I can't comment on durability.
The warranty is lifetime, and covers just what it should.
The sheath is leather, finished nicely, and very heavy duty.
Lastly, Eric Fehrman and his dealer were very pleasant & responsive, and easy to deal with.

In my opinion, there is no viable comparison to Busse knives. Busse is good for chopping and some kind of pride of ownership, but that's it, as I'm concerned.

I'm not trying to offend or denigrate Busse or Busse-o-philes, I'm just relating my personal experience with Busse knives, and now my experience with Fehrman.

t1mpani, you have a good idea there though.

I have no problem if you don't like Busses or "they just don't work for me" as you state, but the rest of your statement is by no means true. They are not anywhere near the same knives. Just take a look at how often the styles are changed through customer feedback and improved designs. They have changed from the straight handle, to the E handle and now the new Fusion series. And if you think all the knives are the same we haven't been looking at the same knives.

What other Busse does the Active Duty look like, or how about the Satin Jack? Take a look at the Pics post on these forums (and others) and you'll soon see there are many differences besides the length.

I have no desire to argue this point, however I thought it was humorous that you stated twice in this thread that all the Busses were the same (except for length)

Buy them if you like them, if you don't like them don't buy them, but unless you have handled, owned or seen every Busse ever made don't make such broad statements.

To further illustrate this point, I've owned and used a lot of Busses and while at Blade show 2 people came up with 2 Busses that I'd never seen before(never seen in pics or otherwise) and I'd never heard the names when I found them out. So please don't make such broad claims.

Are there some similarities between knives in the series, yes there are but there are a lot more differences than similarities and certainly more than just blade length.

Yes, it was a sweeping generality, that I wrote for two reasons.

One is because, for the most part, all Busse's really do look pretty much the same to me. The AS, SJ, PH, MS, are exceptions of course, and there are some minor changes to the grip, but that's about it.
Same blade shape over & over again, with maybe a finger choil added here or taken away there, some different color micarta, but really, just minor variations on the same theme.

However, just as all Busse's are not the same, Fehrman's are not knock-offs or wannabe's, in my opinion. Fehrmans are further from Busse's than Busse's from generation to generation.

Mike
I still disagree with you, but more than anything I think your statement was just to broad. I've often found that some people (not necessarily you) handle or use one Busse and think that it is like all the others because they may look similar. This is definitely not the case. Some do look similar (especially the ergo line) but they do not handle the same.

I won't comment further since I've hijacked this thread enough. I just wanted to make it clear to others that may not have handled Busses before not to judge them until you've used/handled them personally.

Quiet Storm - why did you needless introduce this BS topic into a perfectly good thread?

Why bait this subject again? Do you have a reason?

You say "you call it like you see it". Well, start your own stinking thread if you want to denegrate a manufacturer. There is no reason to hijack an informative thread. Keep BS in Whine & Cheese where it belongs.

Yeah right...I'm the flamer here...

Ley me chime in here:)

First let me say that I own knives from both Fehrman and Busse,First and foremost these are 2 knives that are different, when you look at a picture and then seeing them and holding them you will see right off the bat that they are different.

Now to the original topic,Mikemck you made a great choice, Fehrman knives will hold a edge for a very long time and they cut very well.

My Final Judgement has held its edge better then anything I own,Ive done alot with it from cleaning out pig and yote to trout to making fuzz sticks. The attention to detail that you see in the Fehrman knife is superb, its alot better then alot of my customs, you really get what you pay for.

The handle on the Fehrman's are excellent not to thin and not to big,it fits my hand great and the cushion rubber gaskets between the handle slabs and tang really works when chopping,no vibration whats so ever.

The one thing that shocked me was cutting horse tail, this has dulled the edge of every fixed blade I own, when I used my FJ it did not affect the edge and remained good and sharp:eek:

Thats my 2 cents.

And besides, they're definately looking different now...

Here's some irony. I was browsing the Busse forum, as I usually do, and one of Jerry's new designs looks quite a bit like the Fehrman Peace Maker. It looks at least as much like it as the other Fehrman's look like Busse's.
Still makes no difference to me either way.

About the Peace Maker though. This is a fantastic knife, and I'm really liking it alot. In fact, I like it even more now that I have had a chance to use it quite a bit.
The cutting efficiency is wonderful, and the edge holding is fantastic.
I can't comment on sharpening or hard use, because I have not needed to sharpen it and I have only used it for what I actually use a knife for, which is simple everyday chores.

I like the looks of the Fehrman knives, and CPM3V is one of the best for a stock removal steel. I haven't had the pleasure of seeing one up close and personal though. I had every intention of seeing one at the Blade show, but for some reason, I never made it over. So much to see at Blade, it's easy to get lost. :)
