Felling a tree with a M-43

Good example the curved spine, I know this first hand since I have the goodest one contrary to what Bookie might say. I sometimes think his cheese has slipped off his cracker.
I love that knife, and Thamars Yek and Dui Chirra's are right close to it. Feel great, have a nice gracious curve to them.
If it cools a bit this weekend I aim to take a Thamar Yek out for a test chop, couple trees on the place I can get to with my transportation.

Sure, just post lots of pictures of the mass destruction. We all like seeing that kind of stuff.

I can't be the only person both impressed and amused by your array of little saying like this. Seems like a new one everyday!

On a side note, I seem to be hearing a lot about these curved spines. Is there another thread dedicated to that topic? Seems like something I may need to put on my shopping list..

Everyone needs a Curved Spine on their shopping list. I'd love to have a spare just in case something happened to my first one but I don't want to be a hog ya know.

Thanks for the kind words, I have no sensors on my tongue or my fingers when typing and sometimes they just run amok. Not always a good thing but if your impressed and amused it's a good thing in this scenario.

Bawanna! Reminder for you to take your meds. Thinking about having a custom Curved Spine made. Mebbe with a more gooder shorter handle and a Sutra engraved on each side of the blade.......mebbe a DVD player so I can listen to AC/DC while whackin' at wood.

Oh man, ya got me with the DVD player! That for sure would then be gooder than mine.

AC/DC, that the fella that could lick his belly button with his tongue, kind of had it cut into a fork?

Or do I have my country bands mixed up.

Might as well step up to Blue Ray whilst your at it, then you can watch Wanda Wanda on your breaks.

Course a man in your perfect physical condition probably don't need to take breaks.

...
Naw man that was Miley Cirus. Angus Young couldnt lick his brothers belly button:D
Cant wait to see Bookie choppin to "If You Want Blood". He'll be shakin his head up and down slobbering like a rabbid coon till he gets through that log.

Although I have two Thamar Curved Spines and I love how their lines flow beautifully, I'm a little concerned with their chopping ability. All the Curved Spinbes I've seen have a VERY short primary grind. If you compare the Curved Spines with an M43, the M43 has a much deeper primary grind that makes its edge more acute for chopping. Any thoughts on this?

Kamidog, AC/DC was here a couple of years ago for the Black Ice Tour. Got your audio cranked up?

Dan, I have no issues with chopping. I've did 7-8 4" limbs and they were handled in a reasonable amount of time, but my honest opinion is the Curved Spines are more of a weapon than a Boy Scout camp ax. In the same breath, my Curved Spine would be the last of my collection to go.

I agree with that. It's kind of dual purpose, heavy enough and long enough for some chopping.

The most acute angle on any Khuk I have is on my Samsher.

Book: Awesome band! Love the lighted horns:thumbup: I think Ive seen every tour when Bon Scott was alive. After that I lost interest for a while but still like a lot of the newer stuff. I met them in the green room on their "If you Want Blood" tour. I was sick as a dog from food poisoning but I wasnt going to miss the show because I had backstage passes. Crazy buch o dudes.

Heys guys still learning, when you speak of the love of the curved spine, are you talking about upper, lower or in the grip? My M43 is awesome and feels great. Just wondered exactly where the love came from per se?

Mostly the comment is about the curve in the middle spine versus the hard angle you see in other models. But the M43 (MkII) is really an incredible design overall. Beside the appealing curved spine,me spine is also beautifully tapered from bolster to tip, from booster to butt, and from spine to edge. The correctly made handle also has a slight curve and a downward cant at the butt plate.

The real power in this model comes from the proportional size of handle to blade. The handle in the military issue is always a little less than one third of the overall length (18 inches). This gives the M43 the ability to be a light and effective weapon and the leverage makes it chop above its weight class. A heavy traditional 18 inch M43 would normally come in at less than 700 grams. It's effectiveness is why it was issued over a 30+ year period. The traditional edge, bevel and the taper up to the spine are flat with a slight hollow area which also make it much better at slim vine type vegetation. This flatter blade and mild even taper make it more knife like when doing finer tasks and food prep.

Many kukri lovers have chopped a watermelon with their kukri only to find that when the blade gets about an inch into the melon it breaks the melon rather than cut it. This does not happen with the traditional M43 design and is just another feather in its cap. It's (obviously) my favorite model.

I have a custom M43 and a non-custom Curved Spine Khuk. Both SUPER khukuri in my opinion. They are the same length and very close to the same weight. The M43 has been an excellent chopper in the field and I like it. The CS is an excellent chopper, too, for what I've tackled with it around the home place. (Neither blade sees much heavy field use as I prefer my KLVUK for the nasty stuff I get it into about every other week.) The blades have subtle differences in them and thus their abilities differ some what, but I have not found anything yet that I should be concerned about. Even though my M43 was custom made for me (and it's historical bent has great appeal), the handle/grip of the curved spine actually fits my hand just a bit better. I believe the ringed handle gives me slightly better control when engaged in heavy brush. l would be loath to part with either. So, I guess that my personal preferences are that I prefer the Curved Spine's over all appearance. The continuous arc has a graceful appeal to my eye and proves that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It also feels better in my hand, it "hangs" in the hand differently, or perhaps my psyche is controlled by the khuk's soul and has taken over my thought processes, maybe all of the above. It's also the sister to Bawanna's CS. But what it all boils down to, for you, is that it will make no difference what you want, if the khuk picks you, it's yours. You will have no say in the matter. Both are fine models. Both will serve you well.

What are the 4 bands you drew with the sharpie. What do they represent?

Edit: Never mind. I figured it out. I'm a little slow today.

I have plenty of survey and cartography experience so i decided to put it to some practical use:D
I did contour mapping on several different styles of Khukris just to see if I found any surprises. It was very interesting to note that by doing this i determined that each Kami may have their own style but they seem to stick to these edge geometries very closely. They are surprisingly consistent throughout the product line which tells me they have some very good quality control in the shop that may seem invisible to us sometimes but it works whatever they are doing.

Any GIS experience?
Nope. Wish I would have stayed with it now. I got out of it before the digital age. We didnt even have lasers then. We use good ol plane table, bruntons, and benchmarks. It was all manual triangulation. No GPS. I can imagine how easy it is now with GPS. We mapped subsurface formations as well in 3-D so that may still require some footwork. Dont know? Carrying all those tools around was a job in itself. One guy gets the plane table and the other walks around with the rod. We'd walk all the ridges, valleys and any special key points etc then go home and connect the dots all manually. Dang im gettin old eh!
