Felling Khukuri

Ysva,

I found the FWCK to be very accurate also. It was very easy to hit where I wanted it to.

Cliff: You have taught me so much about how to really judge a knife on its merits or demerits alone and in comparrison to others. I just wanted to Thank You for that!!

No problem. I am just returning the favor from those that have taught me.

[Salyan]

can you recall how it felt too you as far as balance went?

Vaguely, it seemed significantly more blade heavy than the large AK I have. The AK felt much quicker in the hand which I didn't think I would ever see.

I am beginning to think that a knife that has its balance point close to the center of its length may be the most comfortable to use.

Depends on what you are doing with it. Take a blade that balances right on your grip and it feels like nothing in your hand as there are no torques generated when you move it. However slam it into something and it is another matter altogether.

If you can, take a lawnmower blade and grind a decent profile on one end. Take the other and wrap it. You can pretty much determine the center of balance from how it feels when you beat it off of a piece of wood.

You can do the same thing of course without it having an edge on it. But you do get interesting penetration differences when you move past the center of gravity. This is dependent on the angle of the blade on impact as well.

There are two Super Salyans in the works right now but I don't think they are going to be in the 2 to 3 pound category. BirGorkha makes HEAVY khukuris. Blade will be about 5/8 thick so Bura tells me.

Steven, take a look at these when they come over. If you still want one we'll get it for you -- and anybody else who falls prey to the SS.

I still think it is an ugly knife but what the hell do I know?

Blessings from the computer shack in Reno!
