Wildlife :

and Felco :

The saw was not overly useful, on small woods the two blades would cut through it very powerfully, as in 3-5 seconds to cut down small sticks suitable for shelters or direct burning :

The saw was comparable, but it was *much* slower in removing the limbs and scrub brush and had a higher rate of fatigue, you are looking at dozens of heavy pulls vs a few chops. On larger wood the saw was better but the blade still chewed through it easily :

This was only 18 seconds with the Battle Mistress, and actually longer with the saw. It is soft wood and the blades really tear out huge chunks. I cut a dozen small sticks and then tried some larger ones just to check. Even wood much larger than needed for "survival" purposes wasn't a problem for the blades :

This of course is large enough to be productive with an actual felling axe. However still under 60 s with the knife and about double with the saw because the wood was wider than the blade.

I have a lot more wood to cut before the lot is ready to clear and I'll axe (Iltis) the larger wood. The saw tends to be more productive on the smaller woods which are poorly rooted, but against blades which cut as well as these, it doesn't compare well. It also can't do things like this well :

I left my writing pad at home so I carved a small one with the knife. I just cracked off a piece of dead wood and shaved off all the rotted fibre and planed down a smooth surface. As a side note, this brings my SHBM out of its semi-retirement. This is the first time it has been seriously used in years and the sharp end hook reminds me that it has indeed been far too long since I swung it.

For those curious, yes those were high stumps, and no I don't leave them that high when actually felling with an axe or with blades in general. I needed that extra length to do multiple cuts as well in case something went wrong such as a bad knot or fractured wood which meant I needed to redo a cut. They were all cut off flush to the ground with the saw.
