Well I got two new Kershaws today. A Scallion and a Chive. I also own a Mini Cyclone. The Cyclone has no safety. But the Scallion and the Chive do. I saw a review on Youtube and he said he has never used the safety on his and never had one open on their own. So I wonder. Do you use the safety on the Chive and Scallion? Thanks for your respnse.

Bill

I've never used the safety on a single one. They have never opened up by themselves on me.
I have opened one when I used to carry a large keychain and it became encircled around my Leek.
There have been millions of A/O knives made with the safety feature and I've only seen a handful of complaints about opening in the pocket.
Some of those might have been from improper care.

My chive opened in my pocket twice. I got rid of it after that. I could have used the safety but then it is slower to open than a slipjoint. I hate A/O and will never buy a knife with this feature. I have never had any other folder open on me

So we can mark you down as "No" for using the safety.

@ Buck_Fan

I've carried various Kershaw knives with A/O for years and have never used the safety.

I did have a Leek open up on me when I fell asleep with it in my back pocket. It came out of my pocket and it opened and stabbed my right butt cheek. :p

I also fell asleep with a Delica in my back pocket and it was 1/2 open when I got up.

I do NOT lay down with a knife in my pocket anymore. :D

I've had my Scallion open up on me in my pocket. It didn't cut me luckily. It's only happened once and I've carried it loose in my front pocket that way probably 200+ days, so it was sort of a freak thing, but it did happen.

I pretty much have the safety on unless I'm using it I guess - it's never done anything freaky while the safety is off, but I dunno, my Chive opens so fast I'm a little skeered of getting perforated if I just jam it in my pocket w/o the safety on. Just paranoid I suppose, I've never really heard anything bad either way.

I have a LEEK and never used the safety, but it opened once, just enough so that the tip was potruding and it cut my hand as I was pulling my hand out of my pocket.

Carry a Leek frequently and never use the safety. However I do engage the safety when I put it up, although I don't really know why.

I own most of Kershaws AOs and I have never had any even come close to opening in my pocket and no I dont use the safety. The only one I may have slight doubts about is the chive because the blade is so small it could actually open fully in your pocket.

My chive has opened up on its own twice in my pocket. I've never had a problem with my leek. In my opinion, its stupid to have a/o on a knife if it needs a safety. It defeats the purpose of the fast opening and makes deployment just as slow as a slipjoint.

Thanks for playing, really.

To the OP, I don't use a safety and I carry a Speedsafe knife everyday. Never had one open open on me. I would suspect that if it is clipped to your pocket you won't likely have any problems. The Scallion was my main knife for several years and it is typically a Leek since then.

It is Torx.

If you remove it, you have a nice bottle opener if you know the technique :)

I've never used the safety on any of my Speedsafe Kershaws and have yet to have one open up in the pocket. I assume that you increase that risk if you carry your knife loose in the pocket and are moving around a lot or rubbing up against things while working or whatever, but if you keep the knife clipped like I do, then really no worries.

Ihave the zt 350. (the smaller liner lock version of the 300 series and it opened twice on me. Once I looked down and the blade was sticking out through my front jeans pocket. It scared the crap out of me as it came scary sharp. Then I put it in my fanny pack and was reaching in it to get something and rummaging around it opened up and cut two of my fingers. Not deep but again it opened. I would love a lock on it and would buy a 300 series with a lock. The blades are too big and too sharp and open too easily for my tastes. Kershaw, Please put a lock on them.

I have a Chive and a Scallion and I always use the safety. However, the safety makes them kind of slow to open, so I don't carry them alot.

I always use the safety on my leek/scallion/chive, I have never had to deploy the blade so fast as to not take an extra second to slide it out of the way.
