Fellow Kershaw Folks. Do you use the safety?

I carried a Speed Bump for a while and never used the safety. I had no problems with it opening on it's own. My current EDC is a Blur, which has no safety, and has also never opened on it's own.

My Random Leek has the safety. When I carry it I leave it on, but I think that's more my OCD than anything (it was put there for a reason and must be used ;)). All my other Kershaw and ZT AOs don't have a safety and have never opened up on me in my pocket. But I carry them in my left front pocket, tip down.

I always use the safety on my leek/scallion/chive, I have never had to deploy the blade so fast as to not take an extra second to slide it out of the way.

I am thinking of leaning that way as well. I saw another review on Youtube and the person very quickly slid the safety off with his little finger, and before you knew it it was open. It was obvious he had practiced it. I want to loosen up the lock a little and I did put a small anout of oil on it which helped. I think it will depend on how and where I am carrying it as to wether I will use the lock or not.

Thanks for all the input.

Bill

I don't use the safety on my Spec Bump. If I have to leave it at home I might turn the safety on but that's about the only time. The Speed Safe system keeps it closed well enough for so far when it is in my pocket.

All the Kershaw AOs I have had safeties and I used them every time I put them in my pocket. Some of these new models with AO flippers and no safeties was another reason I moved on from Kershaw

The flippers and AO are what have attracted me to Kershaw, Jake. They make me smile and feel like a kid when I use them. :D

I don't use the safety on mine. The only time it opened on me was when I dropped it on the floor, it has never opened in my pocket. I actually emoved the safety completely.

I don't use the safeties on mine at all. I find them to be a hassle and (at least with Leeks - which are the only safety-equipped kershaws I have) I usually do something to lock them in the 'off' position (tightening the screw, a dot of superglue...).

I've never had an assisted Kershaw open in my pocket. They're quite safe, in my opinion, and don't really need additional safeties.

I've got the same OCD. I carry my Leek with the safety on, even when it's tip up. The safety is nice though for when I toss it in a bag because with the safety on I have no worries about it opening in my bag. Makes it convenient to just toss it in a backpack or pocket and know it will stay closed.

used a Boa for 4 or 5 years straight. Somehow it got open halfway half in and out of my pocket - minor cuts to two fingers. Was sharp enough that i had one of those -huh-who's bleedin moments - before I realized it was me.
Admittedly I had used that knife exclusively for years without a problem - but it really bugged me cuttin myself. Sorta put me off AO knives. Still like the Boa enough that i had STR add a ball detent to one and remove the torsion bar - so I've still got the use of one - just w/o AO.

My pocket clips are firm. The spine of the knives I carry are always against the seam of the pocket. In this manner I have never had an issue. (Tip up, RFP, Tip down, LFP) I do not use the safety.

Nope. Never had a Speed Safe folder open on me before in the pocket so the safety seemed kinda redundant.

Upon reflection, I can see the use of the safety if your gonna do something like play backyard football with it in pocket or some other impromptu violent, jarring activity.

Add me to the "never used the safety, never had one open" group. Personally, I think the safety on a AO knife is really pretty bad idea, as IMO it defeats the main purpose of AO knives (quick and easy one-handed opening).

Hi Buck_Fan -

I do not.

best regards -

I put a bunch of loctite on the threads of the safety and tightened it down as tight as I could.

I dont really remember why I didnt just tear it out and throw it away. I have never had one open. I dont carry my Leek anymore anyway, so I guess it doesnt matter.

Same here. I have had them open in my pocket.

I don't know why but the pocket clips and I just don't get along. Most of the time then end up in my pocket instead of on my pocket just so the clips don't snag on something and bend beyond all comprehension or tear out a pocket.

RE safeties: don't like `em. Don't use `em. I torxed the safety on my Chive tight so it would stay in the "open" position because it sometimes slipped to safe accidently, but the unsafetied knife has never opened accidently. Ironic, no? The safety on my Benchmade Barrage is easy to ignore, and so, I ignore it.

I'm always disappointed when I see a cool new Kershaw piece and find that it has a "safety", and will not purchase a knife with such a doodad attached. One more thing to break/go wrong when you need it. I'd love to see a bump without one and with the pocket clip on the proper end.
