felt hat?

this is where i do a lot of my hat shopping. www.noggintops.com www.villagehatshop.com

I have this Henshel. It's great for wet weather and it gets a lot of compliments, but I think it's cause I'm so pretty :)

And here's a packable felt fedora from Orvis that I like in winter. It's my official trad archery huntin hat :)

Are the fur felt hats that much better from a performance perspective?

I don't know about others but an Akubra will last the better part of your lifetime, even used daily out in the bush, mustering cattle, camping, whatever. I've even used mine on more than one occasion to wash down my horse on a hot day in a creek out in the bush.

About the only real downside of a felt hats is that you won't get a lot of air over your head so they can be hotter than other types in hot weather. On the upside, they help keep your head warm in the cold weather.

Are the Akubra stiff or Pliable?

That's a little difficult to answer, depends on what you mean by pliable or stiff, that's a fairly relative thing. Also, depends on the hat.

To give you an idea, most of them are a relatively stiff felt. You could probably crush one into a pack if you had to but it might not look all that great when you got it out. They're not really meant for that sort of thing.

If being able to crush a hat into a small space for whatever reason is an important criterion, an Akubra is probably not what you want.
