I don't think he was trying to pick up chicks. Lots of guys here are married and so would probably not even be all that curious, but curiosity doesn't necessarily mean he's about to ask someone on a date.

Seriously though, who is offended by "male" or "female." I don't see anything even vaguely rude about it. If those words have some kind of dehumanizing connotation, then that is an individual's perception only, because the original poster was obviously not intending to make any such suggestion.
