fenix lights for edc and backpacking.

Wow, Very impressive lights! I have to say, I had never heard of Fenix before I came across this post. I like the surefire products but they are just way too proud of them for my taste (meaning justifiable budget).

You guys have any specific place you are ordering them from?

Did they deliberately make their site hard to read to keep us grouchy old guys from bothering them?

Not exactly W&SS related, so ... off to Gadgets & Gear.

I bought two Fenix L2D Premium Q5 lights last month, and I have to say I'm pretty damn impressed. I'm not a flashlight geek by any means, but these lights really work for me. The fit and finish on the other one is a little sketchy, but that doesn't bother me. These things really put out a lot of light, and seem to be pretty durable. The other one's already taken a good pounding outdoors, and gone swimming through lots of snow a couple of times, but it's come out just fine. Have to recommend these things.

You can argue that Surefire is a totally different animal but I'm sure that the Management at Surefire is looking hard and close at Fenix.

I've been carrying the L2D on walks at night. While I am impressed and I like the battery economy and life, I think it might be more than I need. So I'm thinking of adding one of the smaller Fenix lights like the L0D. I really like that they offer so many styles.

The L0D Q4 is a great light. You could also consider getting an L1D body to convert your L2D for single AA use. Makes the light much more pocketable. Maybe get both. :)

I edc one of the limited edition P2d rebel ones, nice and small, just throw it in my front pocket. 200 lumens on max! Only drawback has been that once or twice it clicked on in the pocket and it gets HOT if you have it on the highest setting.

I got my first Fenix a while back here on the for sale section and I am impressed. This coming from a guy who has many SF's but may never buy another. The little P2D Q5 has really impressed me! I can't believe how bright it is compared to the higher priced old KL1 I have carried for years!. I plan to get another soon.

Congratulations on your purchase!I EDC an L1D.Fenix Lights are very hard to beat, especially in their price range.

Sure-Fire is never going to produce an LED that truly competes with their regular line of lights because they would be killing their cash cow - replacement parts. Their LEDs are more expensive than they have to be as well. I've owned Sure-Fire for years but I'm really tired of buying overpriced lithium batts all the time...for relatively fragile lamps.

I was hesitant in spending nearly $50 for such a small edc light,
That little sucker is bright! especially considering the single AAA battery it takes. And it's only slightly bigger than the ARC AAA I carried for the past few years on my keyring.

Yep, the advance in LED technology has been astonishing.

(I posted this in response to tknife in another thread)
Here's the diminutive 1x AAA Fenix L0D-Q4 (and RB80) (but both on 3.7V rechargeable Li-Ion 10440)
compared to some VERY serious company -
the brightest incandescent lights I have -
the SureFire 9P - yes, 3x Lithium CR123, Xenon light (on standard P90 lamp) and .....
a 1,000,000 candlePower Spot light -

The large difference in color/tints make the comparison more difficult, so....
same shots but with Color removed/deSaturated -

Yes, the incandescents have much brighter central hotspots - so should throw further.....

But remember the Fenix L0D is a mere 1x AAA light - albeit on a 3.7V rechargeable Li-Ion 10440 -
who would have thought this 2 short years ago?

Fenix L0D-Q4 Comparison Review

According to Fenix via the Fenix-Store on the Fenix Digital L0D Q4 Olive Finish -

" Five output modes: 30 Lumens(3.5hrs) -> 11 Lumens(8.5hrs) -> 75 Lumens(1hrs) ->Strobe -> SOS "

I've got an LOD Rebel for Christmas. It's always worked for me, and I appreciate the amount of light it puts out given its diminutive size. It conveniently rides in my shirt pocket using the clip -- next to my pen.

I do, however, have one criticism. I would like it a lot more if it did NOT have the strobe and SOS modes. Having to cycle through them to get back to the normal setting is annoying -- the strobe just about induces a seizure. ;)

You do not have to cycle through them to get back to normal mode -
just turn the light off and and count to 4
(ie: keep it off for more than 2 seconds)
- turn the light back on
and it's in the default medium brightness setting.

I normally do not access either strobe or SOS modes -
but neither do I have to cycle through them.

I've never really been a torch guy, but after a recent power-cut I realised my 2xAAA Mini-Maglite needed replacing. Decided to get the Fenix L1D Q5 so I could also EDC it and was pretty impressed. Just bought a L2D body so I have something more substantial around the house too.

You could always lock out the tailcap to avoid any accidents.

I was aware of that. However, standing in the darkness for 4 seconds can seem like a long time. ;)

I'd still prefer not to have strobe/SOS.

I have many Fenixes and many Surefires. I am sure I will be acquiring more of both in my lifetime. I think Surefire puts a lot more thought into their design, in output and runtime and usability, but Fenix offers a heck of a value.
