I picked up a Fenix P1 on Ebay and it showed up in the mail today. Hooah! Call me Luke Skywalker-- I have my light saber :)

Now I see why people like the Fenix lights. This one is dead simple, about as big as my thumb and pours out the light. There's no free lunch-- it only runs a couple hours on a CR123 battery, but you could go down a trail at night with this thing no problem. On the survival side, it has to be visible for a long way at night for signalling. I took it out in the back yard tonight and my impression was that it is like a car headlamp. That needs some objective measurement, but let it be said, I could see everything bright and clear--- the beam is broad and even. There is a bright center spot up close.

The bundle I got came with a nylon webbing and elastic holster with both a D ring and a belt loop. A small "crab claw" snap shackle was included too.

I have another small LED flashlight, the Gerber Inifinity Ultra, which runs 25 hours on a single AA battery and averages 22 lumens vs. 55 from the Fenix. The Gerber is about twice the size and 2.2 ounces with a battery vs. 1.6 ounces with Fenix. There are many other Fenix and Gerber models, so this is hardly an apples-and-apples comparison. Now I want to see a few more of the Fenix lights.

i just got the L1d today with 90 lumens output, and i must admit without a doubt that it is the brightest light i have ever held. i couldnt help but order another one but this time its bigger brother the P3d with 160 lumens. i think that i may be able to signal in ships and planes with this animal. for the price and light output of these lights i dont think that there is any other manufacturer that can ever come close.

Absolutely agree about the Fenix lights...they are really outstanding. I have several and have been using them over here in Iraq. Other than the max Lumen output with the excellent Cree LED, the other big features are:

Size
Simplicity
Additional functions (strobe and different Lumen levels...very handy)

They have held up well over here...a lot of use, dust, dropped and banged around. I usually keep the P2D (I like it over the P1D for the tail-clicky, but the P1D is smaller and more simple), in an Invoa belt holster...very slim, small and secure.

I also use both the AA versions, L1D and P2D CE versions...both are excellent and if you want a multi-function AA light, these are very hard to beat for the price.

I don't consider these "cheaper" LED's than other brands, as I'm also using Surefire's (Aviator, L2 and G2 models), Novatac's new EDC120, LumaPower's LumaHunter M1, upgraded Seoul-LED Gladiator and a few others. They may not be as robust, but unless you're using your light as an impact weapons all the time or plan to drop repeatedly on concrete from a few meters high...Fenix LED's will serve exceptionally well. They are inexpensive enough to throw in most of your family kits with lithium batteries for emergencies and will be very handy outdoors. I've also used the P2D and both AA versions on a Nite Ize head-band for an excellent "head light" set up.

You can get them direct from fenix-store.com nice bonus is free shipping including international! :)

I have a p3d on order and am waiting impatiently for it to show up!

I just got a L1D CE and it is AMAZING. I'm curious as what body color people are ordering the most. Mine is black, but I'm thinking of ordering the next one in Natural is looks like that finish will hold up better.

Any thoughts or experience regarding the Fenix finish durability?

Compared to twenty years ago, this is the Golden Age of Flashlights. Dozens of choices better than anything available back then. (No, I don't need another. No, I don't need another. No, ..............)

The Fenix flashlights are great!!!

Buy them from the Fenix store. They are quick and have excellent customer service. Another good bet is Lighthound.com. I have used both and like them a lot.

Anyone who is looking at the Cree lights from Fenix...GET ONE! I have the P3D, which runs on 2 123 batteries. On low, you can take a walk just fine, and see a short ways, and it will run for 67 hrs. On high, it puts out a huge amount of light for 4 hrs or so. On max, it runs for about 2 hrs. This is the 4th Fenix light I have bought over the last year or so, and all have performed very well.

I know that the usual topics on this forum are knives and firemaking, but if you have a decent light on you, you may not have to use some of these skills, because you can make it out w/out staying an extra night.

BTW, the largest Fenix light is smaller than a minimag. If anyone wants to spend 50 bucks or so on a flashlight instead of another knife, but does not know what to get, order from Fenix store an L1D-CE. It will have varying levels of light, run off a single AA battery, have long runtimes on low, and put out a lot of light on high. This light will put out more light on low than your Minimag does, and do it for 25hrs or so. It works best on rechargeable or lithium AAs, but alkalines work in a pinch.

If you buy from Fenix-store.com, you can also get AdventureMedicalKits stuff, and all w/ free shipping.

Very good point. "Survival" doesn't always mean being dropped off in the Yukon and having to make it back alive. Our power here in Iraq just plain sucks, and goes out at least a few times a week. For anybody working in an office and had a power outage, a flashlight is an essential piece of kit. These up-and-coming LED lights have multiple functions, one of the better ones is the "strobe" mode for signalling and can become a life saver for those in that situation. There's a bunch of new lights on the market and Fenix is leading the way with affordable, quality LED lights that just plain perform.

You seem to have a bunch of Fenix flashlights. Could you please let me know which finish, you feel, will wear the best, black or natural.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

Congrats on your new light. Looking at the P2D CE myself. My latest is a 3 watt Nuwai (Target River Rock) light that only produces 42 lumin with the luxeon bulb and 2xAA cells. I thought it was bright until my neighbor came over and showed me his new P2D CE. It obliterated my light when he turned it on the same area mine was casting to. Twice the $$.$$, but it's worth it.

I love the Fenix lights I own. Right now I'm EDC'ing an L1D. DA BOMB.

Takes 1 AA (get it anywhere, won't explode in h2o)
Two modes. Three light levels, and strobe and SOS.

Bright mode is BRIGHT. Low mode is good for almost everything.

Stands on end for candle use.

GREAT LIGHT

Ronin, I don't mind either of the Fenix finishes. I have a black one that I edc'd for 10 months or so, and the only wear was where it had been dropped. I never kept it up against keys though.

My natural one is a small one I wear on a necklace. It bounces against a firesteel constantly, and does not seem to show any wear.

I hate twist switches for two reasons: 1) every one I have ever owned has turned on in my pack and drained the bats. 2) You can't turn them on/off with one hand, unless you use a lot of dexterity.

Does anyone make a good LED light with a push-button?

most of the lights that are mentioned are push button:D

Yeap, most of the newer LED's from Fenix have the tail cap. They also go from the max lumen brightness to a mid-level if you twist the cap while it's on...just another good option.

Of the models (CE Models) that use a tail-cap button, P1D (1xAA), P2D (2xAA), L2D (1x3V batt), L3D (2x3V batt).
