We all started with crappy e-Bay or gas station knives, and after breaking several of those we decided to spend more on a knife and then we were amazed by something decent. So, that's a lesson on how crappy knives can be
My reccomendation:
Mora, it costs like 8-12€ based on a model and they're well proven performers.
For serious bushcraft Mora Garberg is going to be hard to beat, it costs more than standard cheap Mora, but you get even more than what you pay for. You have stainless or carbon option.
Cold Steel Drop Forged series are affordable and they come in 52100 steel which has really good reputation for a good reason. I had one myself and it was my favourite EDC knife until it ended up at the bottom of muddy river after I used it to save my dog from drowning tangled in some kind of web/net... Also Cold Steel doesn't have the best sheaths so be aware of that.
Buck is affordable if you are in the US and has a good reputation here.
If you want top notch warranty then there's ESEE, but that will cost bit more.
