I got my first big ferro rod like a week ago and this very same weekend I went out to try it out (I tried it at home looking for the best striker and wearing it a little so it sparks better... but it doesn't count).
On saturday, while my Dad went hiking, I got into the forrest, looked for some fatwood, did some wood cutting with a variety of tools (F1, RAT-7, folding saw, pocket chainsaw, SAK saw blade, etc) and then started a fire. I didn't get the fatwood savings to burst in flames on the first try, but I finally succeded. Indeed I succeded three times.... lol. It was snowing/raining and everything was wet, so I need to do a fair amount of shavings to get my fire going. I guess that starting fire with a ferro rods teaches you get all your wood prepared propertly (small sticks, splitted wood, shavings and tinder). When you use a ligther, you may get lazy... and don't prepare well enough.
On Sunday I went to a different location and besides starting a fire, I also cooked some food in aluminum foil (here is called "papillote"). It was very windy and the ground was wet but luckily the grass an most of the wood wasn't. This time I didn't use fatwood... I just picked up some dry grass and used it as a tinder.
