Is the ferrule on a Mora style knife hollow with the handle material inserted up into it, or would a solid block of brass/SS be sufficient?

I'm puzzled at how I'm going to make a real ferrule if it is indeed hollow. I have no lathe or other turning equipment available...and I would like to use something nicer than a copper pipe cap. I don't think my drill press is rigid enough to bore barstock out without becoming a hazard to the operator. ;)

Suggestions?

True ferrules are hollow. The purpose is to encircle and strengthen
the handle material at the point where the tang is largest and the
handle material is thinest (weakest).

Without a mill or a more rigid drill press, there would be two ways
to make a ferrule.
The first and more common way is to use sheet stock of appropriate
length, and silver solder or braze the ends together to form a ring.

The second way is to drill a 1/4"to 1/2", hole in a piece of thick
stock, and file out the inside to prefered dimension.

I guess I was thinking they needed to be capped. If just a ring is required, I can scrounge up some SS tubing drops from the shop and swage in a bit of taper.

Heck, maybe I should do that anyway and put a guard over it for a cap. That isn't as traditional from what I have read, but probably more functional and safer.
