I like nice knives. I like good steel. Those who know me fairly well think I'm somewhat of a knife snob, although I am always polite and make non-offensive comments when acquaintences (or strangers) show me their $3.00 POS. And I give sincere thanks when well meaning relatives give me those cheap, boxed "theme" knives, such as Harley Davidson, at Christman. But inwardly I sneer. After all, I would't be caught dead using such cheap crap.

Or would I?

You know those cheap $3.00 knives that people give me? I don't CARRY them, but I stick them in drawers around the house, or in the console of my car, or on my work table. And a surprising number time THOSE are the knive that get used for box opening, rope cutting, scraping, etc. After all, why should I mess up my NICE knives with such plebian tasks. I live in a rural area, and when I do outside chores, what do I carry? An old, beat up CRKT Prowler in AUS 6 that I wouldn't recommend to anyone, yet it always gets clipped to my pants.

Who else out there uses a POS more than their expensive knives? Common' -- 'fess up.

I used to be the same way. I'd use the POS knives before risking messing up one of my favorite blades.

Now I'm a little different. You only live once, so you might as well use your good knives and enjoy them while you have the chance.

Around the house, virtually all my "pocket knife duties" are handled by my Sebenza. It was a gift, so I guess that almost counts as a cheap knife to me. However, if I'm out in the garage or the shop, I typically reach for a cheap $1 box cutter to handle most of my needs.

I chose one knife to be my "beater" knife, for all tasks that I might hesitate to use my more expensive knives on.

I use a FFG G-10 Endura. Cuts great. And now that the blade is all scratched up, adding more scratches doesn't make me hesitate.

I'd recommend picking up one of the FFG Delica/Enduras and using that--they around $50-60 which isn't that bad.

I carry a Sebenza most days, but I keep an inexpensive folder in my utility drawer at home for tasks such as opening packages and cutting tape or other sticky/dirty items.

I always carry Gerber EAB and use it very often. Best thing about it is that I don't have to sharpen it :)

The only time I use a "cheap pos" knife is when I need to cut carpeting, shingles, etc. Then I use a razor / utility knife.

Other than that - I use what is in my pocket, no matter what the cost.

Guilty!

I'm just like you. I have plenty of nice knives, but I also have a handfull of cheepo's stashed around the house, and in my truck. I too figure -why mess up my good knife if there's a cheep one within reach?

I have a couple that some might consider a cheap POS but nothing like Gas station Spyderco knock-offs or Pakistani Buck knock-offs.

I keep a Mora in the car or in my "man purse/Bug-out bag" and have several floating around the house for utility work. I guess some would consider those "cheap". So, if you mean using an "inexpensive" $8 knife for the dirty work, then, yes.

I've been using my ZT 0551 for almost the last month for all sorts of tasks around the house. No more crappy knives for me. In fact, as soon as the HEST/F arrives, it will replace the POS I have in my car console.

I carry a Rough Rider small whittler in my pocket almost every day in addition to a larger, more expensive folder.

I use the 3 small blades on the RR every day, and more than any other knife that I carry or use.

Cost $6.51 shipped.

I mostly use either Griptilian or Endura 4. They both are well-used knives, with some scratches and light damage (not me!), so I do not have any concerns for their exterior, only a pleasure of using a good knife.
And keep a Mora in my car console.

Sorry. I try to use a nice knife. Not all though. It depends. For instance, I use my new orange manix to cut everything while my blue manix sits at home untouched in a padded zipper pouch with a tiny silicone bag pushed into the back. Shoot, I have CRKTs that i keep pristine. Then I cut up tons of cardboard with my millie. Price is not the pivolat area in determining likability in my knives. Its more exclusivity and design.

Glad you posted that Toyz. I do the same thing. Whether it's an Umnumzaan, XM-18, SnG, DDR, Delica, Leek I use what I have. That is what it's for ;)

:thumbup: That has to be the best statement I've heard regarding using a knife.

I buy cheap knives for specific, abusive tasks. I have a knife for scraping for example. Another one is just there when I have to gut something and don't have anything but glass or ceramic counter top to cut over. Things like that.

I rarely buy something I'm not 100% willing to use. If I'm not gonna' use it, I don't need to spend money on it.

I don't so much keep a "POS" knife around for rough tasks. When something needs cut I use whatever rode out the door with me that day.
I do however choose my EDC for the day I expect to have. I also have knives in various bags for different outings. A day in the woods, a light hike or whatever.

So yeah if I'm going to be doing yard work all day, I'll probably grab a Byrd Meadowlark and be fine. Not that this is a "POS" knife. Not by a long shot in my opinion.

I just can't hack using those gas station/flea market cheapos.

If I started the day not expecting to hit a trail but I do and I'm carrying a Sebenza, then that's what will get used. But my usual hike pack has an Izula in it for such things.

I usually use those really cheap folders to practice sharpenning, grinding, and just messing with. If it breaks, I throw it out. However, I do use my less expensive blades more than my expensive knives.
