I knew it was some sort of lichen. I found out what it is called. Its Dog lichen

I looked the rooms up in my room book. They appear to be horse mushrooms. Horse mushrooms are edible but there are look alikes that are not.

They were growing out of the decaying wood/debris.

Any of the parks on the Peninsula are good. I recommend ones like Portola Redwoods, Big Basin and Huddart. You should just come next time when the BF crew goes on a hike.
