It's not
that big
(lefbm, ffbm, 18" ang khola (hi), 30" ang khola (hi))
But it is heavier, with thinner handles, and that makes me happy
lefbm vs. ffbm:
(in lefbm / ffbm format)
stock thickness at ricasso -
.310" / .304"
thickness at center of spine -
.280" / .304"
thickness at beginning of edge taper (measured at same distance from tip on both, based on distance of ffbm) -
.272" / .304"
Thickness at tip (at the ridge where the cutting edge bevel begins) -
.105" / .135"
Thickness edge near ricass (at the ridge where the cutting bevel begins) -
.055" / .087"
point of greatest over all thickness of handle slabs (mag vs. standard) -
1.065" / .830"
Choil size (from edge of talon hole in line with the edge to the start of the cutting edge) -
1 15/16" / 1 14/16
Overal length -
16.25" / 16.50"
weight -
16lb 12.9oz / 1lb 15.8oz
so, the ffbm isn't thicker in stock thickness at the handle, but it maintains its overal stock thickness from from the to back where as the lefbm tapers noticably from the ricasso to the tip, and has a the full flat grind with a thinner edge. Because of the thicker stock thickness in the handle and the mag handles and the full flat etc etc, the lefbm does much better at feeling like a fast chopper, something thats easier to use for regular cutting tasks without instantly weighing you down, and it feels like it would absorb shock better.
And then the ffbm feels like more of a chopper, with a much more "solid" feeling handle. Solid like a crowbar though, it feels like it would reverberate more because of how solid and heavy it feels. I doubt that there is much of a difference as far as actual transmission of shock and vibration in actual use, thats just how it feels. The ffbm I have is also a 1/4" longer then the lefbm I have. weird.
Overall I instantly prefer the ffbm just because I wanted the fbm to be as heavy as possible when I got it. Oddly enough, the 18" ang khola with its stock thickness of (at ricasso) .429" actually weighs .2 oz less then the ffbm. even at almost a half inch thick, it loses most of its weight by not having a full tang handle at its stock thickness like the battle mistresses have. It also throws its weight farther forward by losing its weight in the rear. For reference, the 30" ang khola weighs 5lbs 4.2oz.
