FFG = boring

Is it just me or are fully flat ground(FFG) blades boring? I don't need a crazy asymmetrical nightmare grind, but I do like a nice grind line, a little bit of the full stock and a swedge. I can't deny the slicing ability of a FFG blade, but It is the grind with most stock removed leaving the blade weakened. Bob Lum designed some knives that are almost FFG, but they still have finesse, like the Onslaught, Chinese folder, and Deja voo, but on the other hand FFG like the new Endura are BORING...ZZzzz. Those pretty colored handles don't make up for it either.

Some may like FFG for aesthetics while others for slicing ability. I like it because of simplicity and slicing capabilities. I don't dislike some other grinds, but am not crazy about bayonets and such.

Hey, some folks wouldn't trade a case of beer for the Mona Lisa! We're all different.

I generally prefer a grind that will perform over one that looks pretty, so FFG is probably my fav. grind out there.

i dont think anything slices as well as an FFG but i know what your talking about...i love the hollow grind on my sebenza cause it looks very cool IMO

Simple fix for ya, don't purchase any knives with a FFG blade design. :rolleyes: The lesson endeth here... ;)

:)

I imagine those that find FFG boring stare at their knives more than actually using their knives. :rolleyes:

The performance of a boring full-flat grind is more important than the exciting grind line of a saber-grind.

I use my knives all day. I was just looking at my Rajah 1 which is FFG and it's just so sterile. I'll get more FFG blades in the future because they work, but I'd prefer that they are artfully done like the work of the late great Bob Lum and not just folding kitchen knives.

Haven't had any cutting/slicing problems with my non-FFG knives so I think its a rather tight area of "betterness".

As for looks, I get what the OP is saying. I don't find FFG boring...some look very nice in fact but a skillful grind line on a thick blade is a thing of beauty and exudes a toughness and appeal that says, "I'm a BLADE"!

Whatever floats your boat....

I haven't found FFG blades to perform all that much better than a nice hollow grind, quite the opposite. so while I don't mind a flat grind, I'll go with a hollow if it's available.

First it's the grinds are too thick, give us FFG. Now it's FFG's boring, do something interesting.

Take the FFG to Tom Krein and he'll do whatever you want. :)

Personally I'm a huge fan of a full flat grind. Best performer in my opinion. Though I'd love to see a Military with an H1 blade and a nice hollow grind. :D

I have a couple reasons why i like FFG better than the others, but the most important reason is that it does cutting for my uses better than other grinds.
