FFG Hybrid, Chapter III -- Now you see it...

That is damn nice work. How does the dura cote hold up?

I get asked that a lot. The answer is "it depends."
It dries to the touch after 12 hours when the solvents evaporate, but it doesn't reach full strength until about a month.
One of my recent customers couldn't wait and paid the price. On the blades, it does really well unless you baton, then it leaves marks. I did a thread on this same subject. See http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/958462-Just-how-durable-is-DuraCoat to find out. But that just addresses the coating on the blade. On scales it should wear like iron. I media blast them first, which gives them a great grip, but it also leaves microscopic valleys for the color to collect in. Abrasion occurs on the top of the little peaks, leaving the color in the valleys. When wear does occur, it gives the scales a mean "veteran" look.

Very very good work! Do you blast the handles with regular media?

There is no such thing as "regular" media. Blasting is a very flexible process with lots and lots of different abrasives to use for media -- everything from baking soda to glass beads to walnut shells to coarse sand.
The stuff I use is alleged to be crushed scrapings from commercial smoke stacks, and comes in two different grits.

That's pretty sweet. I have to admit I liked the polished version better. Wonder what happened to it and Thrill? The duracoated handles are pretty awesome though.

I wish I knew. REALLY disappointed that a real Beckerhead could turn into the other kind of "head" and hold up not one but TWO passarounds from his brother Beckerheads. I'm just a little concerned that I'll never see that knife again. I guess that's the chance you take when you offer something like that, but to have it stop at the first landing is just beyond my comprehension.

Yep, he's got one of my gladii and two fighter/utilities that I sent him several months ago for kydex work as well. He didn't really seem the type to cut and run either, so I have to wonder what the deal is.

I'm not the hugest fan of duracoated blades, or coated blades in general, but those handle scales really appeal to me. How much detail can you get on those? A set of camo ones with my avatar on them would be pretty nifty, for instance :)

My old eyes can't even SEE the detail of your Avatar, much less paint it!
I think you'd lose a lot of the detail on the rough surface that I do with the blast cabinet prior to coating.
