FFG Large Choil Boss Jack

Pretty sure that they were a staple in the Trough for Blade Show East '17. I say "pretty sure", because although we got teasers on some of the knives being brought, we didn't get the 411 on a complete list of the many, many knives they always brought to a show... Unfortunately, I wasn't at BSE for '16 & '17, so can't rely on memory this time...but did catch a comment about how the poster wishes more would hit the X from Blade Show. The thread & post were from 2017. I think the thread was the one you linked 🤔

Nuker Nuker & threshold threshold , I’m pretty sure all the ones y’all are calling FFG are convex.

On Nukers the coating and G10 color/pattern says convex CG, and from what I can tell from angles.

And on threshold those 4 on the left are convex, the far left one I actually remember that specific knife (wish it was mine) and its built off a convex CG. The others looks like CGs too. That DIW I’m not sure, if its .18” thats LE thickness but they were all saber-flat regardless of choil size, but it looks convex, especially how the light bends on the blade and ricasso.

Here is my current BJ lineup, I’ve had bunches of others and the only FFG BJ I’ve ever seen made of INFI outside of custom-one-offs is the anorexics (i think bladeshow only, they came in digicam cerakote) and the cryptek cerakote ones from that ganza (mine is on the far right). FFG Boss Jacks aren't very common other than the battle grades.

dobermaniac dobermaniac hey you are totally right, some of them are definitely fully convex. I wasn't thinling and I meant that the primary bevel is full height, and not broken partway down like a saber grind. That has me wondering actually though, and ill take a look tonight, are these ffg with a convex secondary bevel? I have a lot of bark rivers that are true full convex grinds, and i think the g-rexed one and the choilless one are fully convex but if i recall correctly the others have a noticeable edge bevel.

threshold threshold ah yeah I gotcha. I think they’re convex but do have a secondary bevel. I think that plus the overall angles make it easy to mistake as a full flat grind
Easiest way I’ve found to tell is laying just the blade on a flat surface/coutertop. If it can move/rock at all its convex and if its solid flat surface against flat surface its a full flat grind.
Sweet collection though, I do love that g-rexed one (let me know if you ever wanna part with it!)

You can see here 1 and 4 are what i'd call for lack of a better term full Busse convex, the others basically have a more noticable secondary grind that's convex and the coated one seems like a v grind. Here's a spine shot to show blade thickness. Also, 2 brkt models that are actually convex saber, there is no secondary bevel at all. And finally, the brkt compared to the g-rexed Busse. You can see that even the 'fully' convex Busse actually has a kind of a secondary bevel, vs the ultra thin edge on the brkt. Different strategy on convex. Have never really compared that closely before, pretty interesting!20251020_213048.jpg20251020_212935.jpg20251020_212347.jpg20251020_211838.jpg20251020_211847.jpg20251020_211959.jpg20251020_212009.jpg20251020_211918.jpg

And dobermaniac dobermaniac damn man, that is an extensive, beautiful collection of jacks! Love the swedged, tequila, bone. Always been interested in the diversity available within a single model, and it's kind of crazy how much of a difference there is in feel between them. I was unaware of the anorexic model, what is the blade thickness on that? Is the swedged one a mo- it looks like there's an etch on there, what does that say? Also, what is the blade thickness on your ironwood?

threshold threshold nice pics! kinda shows how easy it can be to mistake the grinds. the transitions on the LEs are kinda gradual plus the edge being convex makes them hard to tell too.

The swedged one is actually a Battle Grade variant I found on AZCK, I just gave the “SR-101” part a deep etch and stripped it.
Yeah there are anorexics and fatties but I think they were both show only ones so there aren’t that many of them. My anorexic is .16, just a hair over a SCABS that matches it. I think on the Fatties there have been a few different versions that are slightly different but theres only a handful of each.
My Desert Ironwood and Camel bone are both .22, basically custom CGs like your Grexed one.
Boss Jacks are my favorite lol, theres a few I wish I had kept or grabbed when available.

Heres a shot of some lined up and what my calipers say they are: anorexic (.16), LE (.18), CG (.22), BG (.23), fat (.3)

I’ve never seen a .3 jack!! That’s amazing, I’m guessing there weren’t many of them around?
My Ironwood is .22 also and full convex

Is the camo one anorexic too?
