fiberglass resin

I've used the Bondo/3m stuff was initially disappointed because the colors of my orange canvas seemed to turn pink. However, after sanding to 600/800 grit, colors popped back out. I'll see if I have a picture.

Amongst boat builders, polyester is considered to be the weakest/cheapest of resins, but if done properly, ti still works well. All of the early Bertram boats were laid up with polyester IIRC. A lot of the better commercial boat builders today use a gelcoat top coat and vinylester resin for wetting out the glass cloth. Not as strong as high grand marine epoxy in absolute terms, but it still very good.

A little-known secret for any of these omcosites that we use or stabilized wood for that matter, is that once you get them to the level of fisnih you want. you can hit them with kind of thin adhesive like super glue rot excess epoxy for that matter and that will restore the dark color. I am trying to find some spray like maybe artists fixative that could be used on Canvas Micarta or G10 that has been blasted or otherwise left rough for grip. Buffing it kind of defeats the purpose of leaving it rough, but there are very few things uglier that black or green canvas that are that powdery gray color IMO.

Any of you ever used the non-slip additive? I mean for knives, or in any capacity. I'm thinking about trying one to see how it feels. Might be really cool.

Jdm, I will definitely be using CA on the finished scales, whether there are any pits or not.

Also want to try glow pigment powder.

Maybe I'll throw everything at one block to see how ugly I can make it. :D

I have always been interested in doing this but have never taken the time to try it yet , so I am watching this thread with interest .
DokeOO , I am very curious about how you did your pine cones . Do you just stick them in a cup and pour resin on them or what? I`m trying to picture how you go about it . If you would care to share , I would like to know . Thanks

Someone makes a resin cast that has the spirals (forget what they are called) from drilling steel. I've also seen pinecones and bb's. There's also some really neat stuff made with (I think) aluminum foil cast in colored resin.

I'm interested in making any of these, so if anyone has any info or better, experience, I'd like to know too.

I was really impressed with the look of the Techstab and Woodstab by this gentleman in Denmark: http://techstab.com/techstab/techstab-silver-spring-standard/24/144/0/techstab/techstab-silver-strings

I attempted to make some of this myself with the 3M Fiberglass Resin. Like you Strig, the only info I had was aluminum foil+epoxy=gorgeous handle material. I made a long irregular strip of the foil, accordion folded it up and pressed it down into a square tupperware half-filled with the resin and then poured the rest on top so it was completely submerged. Because of the murky color of the resin I did another the same way, but I wanted it to be more black so I ran a little alcohol through a sharpie to extract all the ink and then added it to the second batch of resin. I am sure this is a ridiculous way to color resin but the mad scientist in me wanted to see what would happen. Once they both set up they looked really good. Exactly the way I wanted it to look. Unfortunately, the resin just didn't want to adhere to the foil. I even crinkled up the foil before I put it in the give it some creases to hold onto. It held up in some places but otherwise would split wherever the foil stuck out of the resin.
I can only assume that the Techstab is made with an epoxy resin rather than a polyester resin and may have a more technical process dealing with hydraulic presses or vaccuum chambers or oompa loompas etc. I plan on troubleshooting the issue a little more because I really dig the look.

Anyone have any thoughts on how they do this ? I tried to goggle it but could find nothing . I would really like to try this but don't know where to start . Would really appreciate any help .

Has anyone used any of the Raka.com epoxies? I used them a few years back for boat work and they were good epoxies and reasonable priced - for epoxy anyway:) The folks there were very good to talk with and knowledgeable.
