Fiddleback Forge Needs You!

I'm mad at some time looking to buy a Karda 3 fingers Karda (old model) to use as my bird and trout.

But it is rare. I do not like the current 3 fingers karda.

If re-produce the old model will be excellent.

woke up and got some fresh ideas:

1. since it a big step for you I propose get first 100-300 knives numbered or at least put - first production line
or make preorder knives numbered
I would buy a low number knife for collection -let say #3 ( after you and Allan) or #1:D:D:D

2. you may start preorder list now

3. think about sheath
if you start with micarta handles to order kydex sheath or very simple production sheath will be good
then person who will buy - can use your knife immediately - I have a number of knives sitting in drawer because I do not yet have sheath to start using them
with time I keep using the ones that I can put into available sheath and "forgetting" about some that did not have it
you may wait 4-5 month for sheath from sheath maker - if it a gem of your collection - it's ok to wait, but if it your working knife ...
sheath could be optional to buy or not

4. think about fasteners ( I hope I put correct name). Then people may change handle and make themselves some other color - customize it or you can sell extra different colors ( some folks love orange )

Numbered knives sound too much like Busse and Bark River. Stay unique, it's why you matter.

No. They are one piece construction, and will be available in black and natural canvas micarta.

FYI, we will continue to offer our handmade knives in just the same way we have.

Awesome to hear Andy!
Good luck on this new business venture

why? you support a new start of something, you proud to support your favorite team and that remind you about that you was one of the first who predict success and actually buying the knife and using it help to advertise it

not only busse or bark river
benchmade, and other production companies are doing it

survive made numbered knives for PREORDER - means people so much believe in them that pay money upfront before even first knife was existing.

the FB want to start PRODUCTION, what's wrong with numbers?

again it up to Andy take or do not take idea. they may decide to do not do just because it to expensive to put individual numbers...

it could be not a number but some memorable sign, what ever even "Andy Roys bushfinger" or "cheers" :D:D:D

you anyway using somebodies ideas more or less

Alan doing Loveless hunter - does it sound like Bob Loveless??? yes it does so what??

making first production knife in limited model and limited colors and especially S35Vn does it sound like Spartan Blades?

all our life is taking the best from previous and process it into ours...

Who needs a sheath? Just carry it around in your hand...

But anyway... ESEE really hit some homeruns with the Junglas sheath. That sheath is just cool... maybe Taja has some good ideas about sheaths.

Congrats Andy. Your work is impeccable. Anything or anyone related to fiddleback forge gets my attention.
Keep up the superb work

Taja, there's no need to shout or butcher the language.

Trust me, I likely believe in Andy as much or more than anyone. I think he will succeed without all of the contrived marketing that you're suggesting. He already has and the customers are already in place.

Of course Andy can take his company in whatever direction he chooses; I just prefer a community of owners without all the fanboys (fanbois, whatever) so am resistant to numbered runs or similar.

Preorders from a new company on knives not even in production is a reflection of hype, nothing more. Perhaps there is some credibility if the maker is already known. The hype is unnecessary for Fiddleback.

Unfortunately this sentiment is far too prevalent amongst many people in the world. Create something unique of your own. I understand being inspired by the work of others but outright copying (as you're suggesting) is not a good ethic.

We will be selling these exclusively through dealers. I will be able to hold onto some of the extras, if there are any for Blade Show. Maybe a few of those will go on the forums, and as passaround knives. They will be marked Fiddleback Forge without the AR. My name on a knife always signifies that I did all the post heat treat grinding and handle shaping. These will say only Fiddleback Forge to signify that they are production knives. This run will not be numbered, future ones might be. The handles will be fastened with flared 1/4" tubing. These are no nonsense working tools and I always admired this fastening strategy of Busse's. The sheath is going to be leather and is going to come from JRE. Custom sheaths will be available from any of the vendors that work with my brand.

I take a lot of things from Busse and Bark River. Much of my business was built around these two business plans. I happen to like and respect both of the leaders of these companies as well. I've had a good bit of encouragement and conversation and direction from Mike Stewart. I did get to meet Jerry Busse once over my Blade Show table and we had a nice conversation. Both men have made successes of themselves in the knife business and I admire them both.

Do you think that you will be interested in doing drop shipments? This could be an easy way for you to get a lot of the small guys selling your knives, and it could give you some blanket advertisement.

Andy, glad to see you remain inspired by Jerry and Mike but are not copying them. Stay unique, it's a big part of why you've made it to where you are.

Hoping for continued prosperity for you and the crew!

You'd have to tell me more about drop shipments. I'm really not clear what that means. We are planning right now to do the first four models. I believe in my designs. They are good tools. This line is going to compliment the handmades, and will rely on the quality of the designs, comfortable handles, and good steel to make them stand out. Hopefully your favorite designs come up first. The Runt is going to be 2nd. We're going to do that one skeletonized. It'll be the cheapest too.

Holy Schnikes!!!! Andy and Nathan the Machinist teaming up?!?!?! Wow!

Wait a tick.... Did I read that right cause no one else commented on this?

The more I hear, the more excited I get.

The Runt will probably be a Great seller. I've been talking to a few people about it and it seems to be very popular.
