Fiddleback Friday 4/26/13

Great looking batch again. Some pretty wood this week.

Heal quickly! I'm like 5 weeks into healing up my index finger after my dumbass injury.

Good to see someone grabbed the tux recluse. But it looks convex and not scandi?

Heal up fast and don't make any Camp knives the next couple of weeks please ;)

Andrew, is this one still available?!?! I'm so freakin excited! If its free, I'LL TAKE IT. Woot!

2013 0426 010 – Bushfinger, Red burlap on black bolsters, Tapered tang, Convex on 1/8” thick steel - $290

You got it Schmittie. Worth the wait too. She's gorgeous. Thanks!!!

Indeed, it is convex. Sorry for that confusion.

I will take 0213 0426 010 bushfinger if its not sold.

Sorry, but that one sold to Schmittie.

Damn Andy, I hope the hand heals fast. I think when you work with sharp pieces of steel, manipulating them into, and hold them in positions much different to those of actual knife use, bleeding just seems to always come with the territory. I deal with this more than people might think just trying to capture specific lighting and contrasts...or convey another point. To perform a task with a knife is usually easy, to capture it well in an image not always so easy, and I don't deal with anywhere near the amount of hazards you makers do. A lot of people don't grasp just how much damage the tip of an unsharpened blank can do to a human body, but I have seen it first hand, and helped with the first aid. The hazards you guys face so nonchalantly on a daily basis is nearly as much the reason I have such respect for you guys as the end results of your craftsmanship. Your end results are just much better than may out there :)

What a nice batch of knives Andy! That bolstered wenge Hiking Buddy is beautiful, man just look at that taper! The way the light plays on the grain structure of that osage is really something. That masur birch Recluse is a stunning piece of eye candy, I love the way those materials go together, and damn that masur birch Kephart is gorgeous. And damn, look at the grinds on those 1/8 Bushfingers!

Well well, you finally got your 1/8 Bushfinger :) Cograts man, nice score!

It's the new scandi didn't you hear :D Just kidding, definitely looks convexed to me too. Maybe he was eating pain pills for the sore hand by the time he typed all of that out ;)

And hey, other guys might want one! Not me of course....for now anyway, but others may :)

Andy,
What a batch! I would like to take this one if it is available

2013 0426 02 – Hiking Buddy, Wenge with nat can bolsters, Tapered tang, Convex on 5/32” thick steel - $265

Thanks,
Guido

My apologies bro. Didn't mean to steal this one from you. But maybe it is true what they say- "great minds think alike"......lol. Keep you eye out, Andy has been cranking out some VERY impressive blades this year. As far as I'm concerned, THIS is the year to buy a Fiddleback.

You got it Schmittie. Worth the wait too. She's gorgeous. Thanks!!!

Thanks Andy!! I have can't wait to see this one in person. Do you realize, this is the first FB I have ever managed to get on Fiddleback Friday? I almost had a panic attack when I realized what time it was and I figured I missed out again. I'm glad this one was still there. (even the wife said "you gotta get that one, its beautiful!!")

Thanks Mark! I've been checking every week waiting for that "perfect" one to come around. I think this will do nicely.

Yes sir Mr. B. Ever since I saw the "original" Bushfinger, I have always dreamed of snagging one of Andy's bolstered knives. But they always seemed just out of reach. Today, I showed Mrs Schmittie the day's batch and she said "you have to get that red BF. Its beautiful!" That was enough for me. No argument there.

I've been waiting for a micarta combo for a while in 1/8" of course. In a conversation last year, Andy informed me that since I like to clean my knife off in the nearest creek after fd a deer, micarta would be the logical choice for me. (He knows me too well) The first FB I ever had was a FOD Burlap micarta Hunter. It was unbelievable!!

Hey Schmittie, I just wanted to echo the comments about being glad that you finally got your 1/8" Bushfinger! It's really nice!
Now, if Andy is able to read my mind with the handle combo I've been holding out for and I'm quick to the draw, I'll grab mine as well!

Have a great weekend everyone!
Sergio

Heal up fast, Andy!

I love that Osage. My Osage woodsman has aged incredibly to a deep pumpkin color from hours and hours and hours of rolling through my hands over the last few years.

Love that tuxedo pattern. The dark/light contrast reminds me of a knife tucked away in and old west gambler's boot.
Andy's work never ceases to spur my imagination.

Thanks Sergio!

I am very excited as well. The knives Andy had been making have been very impressive indeed! I am sure what you are looking for is right around the corner.

Heal up fast, Andy!

Man, I agree! I spliced my tendon on the thumb of my left hand several years ago and have the scar to prove it. (Fresh blades of a carpet knife are made to cut deep) many stitches, a goofy brace and weeks afterwards, all is well.

I hope you mend well. Be careful bro. You KNOW your knives are wicked sharp!

I usually just pause to put a latex glove on until I can stop to go to the sink. This time though, I bled so much it was actually very fascinating. It was a stab style wound to the meaty part of the palm, beneath my thumb. I cupped my hand and held it out and Dylan and I watched me fill my hand with blood quite fast. I would have filled a glove immediately. So we stopped and dr'd it up right away this time. LOL.

Thanks Jake. Thats actually almost exactly how I pictured that combo when I first layered it up.

Damn! Hmmm, maybe you should add the criterion "former combat medic" to your list of questions for interviewing the next apprentice :)

I qualify then :D Not good at handles, but I can grind a decent convex ;) (don't do scandis, I'm Norwegian)

Andy; Pics or it didn't happen ;) Seriously; ouch, that can be a bitch and take some time healing..

Andy,

If this one is still available, I'll take it....

2013 0426 03 – Hiking Buddy, African blackwood on nat with a lime green pinstripe, Tapered tang, Scandi on 1/8” thick steel - $265

Honestly, I almost bought this one.

I've been picking up a blade a year from Andy since getting started with the handle laminates. If I had not put an offer on ten acres Thursday, I'd have easily justified and bought that one, it hit all the high points for me. . .all in all though, I happier that you got it now. My Fiddlebacks for the most part go to knife shows and sit on a table looking pretty. I trust you will get many years of service from yours.

Besides I'll pick up another at blade. ;)
