Fiddleback Friday! Black Locust! 11/09/12

The Black Locust is AWESOME! Nice, now I have to have one of those too!

Are the tapered tangs getting even thinner? They look great. Nice batch!

Yes. They will be a sliver when I am totaly confident with it.

Another gorgeous batch - particularly the bloodwood, though I think "tuxedo" is finally growing on me.

But, no Bushies, and I just dropped this week's fiddleback funds on a classic Rem 722 in .257 Bob that's older than me, and probably shoots better than me too.
Maybe next time...

Great work with the black locust Andy, your pics don't do it justice. It's one of my all time native species favorites.
With your permission Andy, I thought I might give the folks a taste of what some serious figured black locust can look like.
This kind takes a lot of sweat equity to harvest. It's from the heart of a very large stump. Gotta want it.

Get this one out in the sun and you can get really lost in it.
RLo's just jealous.....gotta help dig the stumps and cut them up to get any of this from me.

Dude, I sooo gotta get one of your tapered tangs! For that I'd almost trade you a one-of-a-kind, first-ever Fiddleback Bushfinger. Lmao...sorry, yes it's been one heck of a month and I've had a few beers...

I'm not intending to buy any more of Andy's knives. I have 4 already, and it has to stop somewhere.

But if that Arrete had been in maroon linen micarta, I might have cracked. One of those dagger-ground bushboots from last week in maroon linen with a tapered tang, and I'd probably climb over my own mother.

I'm glad you did. I didn't get color like yours, but the wood is niceer in person than in the pics at least!

LOL
I hate to hear that you're done buying, but I can appreciate that position. So, off to make maroon linen arete's and dagger's...LOL

Well, I'm selling a Dozier K-20 cos I don't like the balance (too handle heavy). So if I got a Bushboot as a replacement, then that doesn't count as a new knife, right? Besides, the 4 knives I have from you are all pretty woods, so I'm still allowed one in maroon micarta, aren't I?

Now you see what happens?

Few things have made me really laugh recently, this has been one of them! I do understand though, that dagger-ground Bushboot was the most useful looking variation on the dagger design that I have seen in a long time.

The knife you decided to keep for yourself - what model is it and what are the specs? :D

Looks like a Kephart to me....that locust almost has the look of old cracked ivory, very nice looking stuff!

What are the specs of a Kephart? They're not listed on the site that I can find anyway.

It's a relatively new design, so it's likely not listed on Fiddleback's website. However, there is a thread here on the forums that should have the information you need: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/986072-Kephart-by-Fiddleback-Forge

I just received a Kephart and, although I haven't used it yet, the design and execution of that design are outstanding, IMO. It is really pointy and sharp, but feels like it has a superb tip. I think it is going to be an excellent slicer.

The knife that I have is 5/32" and I think that the Black Locust one above is probably 5/32" as well, but they've been made in 1/8" too. Hope that helps.

Fiddleback this is another outstanding batch. You guys seem to be in a real groove right now; each week keeps turning up super desirable knives! Great job, keep the good stuff coming

Wow, the black locust has tremendous character. Fantastic. And those Kepharts keep catching my eye. Great stuff Andy.

That is indeed a Kephart. 4" blade and 4.5" handle. All minz.

Looking at this sober it occurs to me that I was likely the only one seeing the humor. The humor to me, and the compliment, was that with me just trading a $500.00 knife and a $100.00 machete to get the Bushfinger back, and then having left in the middle of a conversation with my brother because he was eyeballing the knife a little too hard, The odds of me actually trading it away are pretty damned slim...with the only possible exception being to the guy who made it to start with. And then...all of that was distorted by alcohol after a couple of months of a very dark mood. I meant no offense to anyone with the remark, it was just probably a bad time to try to express a compliment. .
