Well I made 9 sheaths this weekend. I was up till one AM every night, my hands are raw, and after finishing stitching the last one I'm so ready for a rest. Anyway I also made a few custom firesteels. This one is a 10mm x 100mm (big) and has an osage handle to match the osage handled nessie.

Nice work. Kydex is so easy to work with I'm afraid of trying my hand at leather. All the holes and stiching, dying, cutting...ugh. How do you plan on retaining the firestarter in its loop? Is it easy to drill a hole through the ferrocerium?

The loop is so tight that retaining the firesteel is not a problem. I didn't drill the ferro rod. I epoxied it into the little handle. I just ordered ten more of these firesteels. This was a fun project.

Ah, gotcha. Leather friction retention scares me a little for something that you really need to be there...when you need it. Also with use I would expect the leather to relax and the ferro rod will of course get smaller with use.

What kind of epoxy did you use for the ferro? I've been thinking of picking up some of those big rods and putting micarta handles on them. Will devcon do the trick? Maybe a few notches in the rod to give the epoxy some extra grip?

I sanded the rod to roughen it up and used Devcon.

Great work , I dig the pattern of dye on your leathers. :)

May I ask where you score those thick firesteels ? ( or ferro rods , flint rods , whatever those are :D )

Yea , leather can be a pita to work , you have to have patience !
I am currently putting a leather 'disk' handle on an old Bowie style PIC knife I have, doing a little each night until I have enough of the 'disks' , cutting them totally by hand is a measure in patience , and I am not a patient person , hehe.

Thanks. The firesteels come from:

They're the 10mm x 100mm. Almost laughingly large....

That setup is really, really awesome. The leather work looks great, as does the blade... and firesteel. I'm really going to have to order some of those Hickory skinners to try that Nessmuk style.

Is that setup something you're going to try and sell eventually, or is it just for fun?

When I make more, they'll be for sale.

 .....Beautiful sheath. I must learn how to make sheaths one of these days.

Nice Job! I like that you paired the knife with a big firesteel.
