  • Today marks the 24th anniversary of 9/11. I pray that this nation does not forget the loss of lives from this horrible event. Yesterday conservative commentator Charlie Kirk was murdered, and I worry about what is to come. Please love one another and your family in these trying times - Spark

Started laying out my gear this evening. Plenty more to get out but it's a good start! Thursday can't come quick enough!

Orion, you backpacking it over?

Question, when you pack all those things in the bag, do you have to let airline know about it when you check the bags? Just curious, how do you prevent the the checkers or crew from helping themselves?

we didn't mention anything. i don't know if that's right or wrong.

you really can't as far as I know

So is it recommended to leave bags open for security to check or lock the case up? Not trying to drag jet out, but I have wondered how do I travel with my smaller fixed blades, within the US?

not a recommendation, i'm just relaying my last trip.

i put a bunch of knives & machetes in my suitcase and handed it to the guy checking bags and headed to the security check point.

***edit

the suitcase was not locked.

The only time you have to claim something that I can think of is with a firearm. That whole process is interesting, but not a big deal. Take pictures of everything you're checking of value and if it happens to get lost, which is very unlikely, you submit a claim.

If you lock your bag with a non TSA approved lock they will break the lock if they need to check your bag. Not worth worrying about it in my opinion.

I've got most of the items from the recommended packing list staged.

I'm planning on using either a ~ 3" or ~ 4" bladed (Handyman/Bushfinger) for Saturday's knife skills session. I'm also bringing along 3 larger bladed knives and for use as possible trade items, two separate Fiddlebacks in soft cases.
