Field carry knife sharpener

My EZE-LAP ? I needed a very sharp edge this morning so I quickly touched up my Fallkniven 3G quickly and it's now VERY sharp and did the job perfectly !!! Knowing how to sharpen freehand is a good skill.

I got the DC4 and a Spyderco double stuff. Gave the DC4 away and kept the Spydie. The DC4 wasn't bad but I prefer the finer edge the Spydie gives me and was araid that the rough side on the DC4 would wear out too quick. I added some course wet & dry sandpaper for really bad nicks and I'll also have the file on my Vic Spirit if something goes really wrong.

I really dig the Spydie though. I got larger stones at home but often just use the Spydie in a pinch because it's so handy freehanding in front of the tv or whatnot.

Are the sides of the Double Stuff the same grits as the Sharpmaker's Med and Fine rods? Can you use the leather case for the Double Stuff as a strop?

I am a big fan of the DMT double sided sharpeners in medium and fine(red/blue). They are lightweight and with the medium side you can remove steel quickly before going to a few swipes on the fine side. Also the medium grit will remove steel fast enough to rework a super dull edge or even work out a dent or chip. I have actully used mine to fix a dropped and broken tip so that it was usable again :)

What Mr. Siegel said!

I use a gerber diamond pen rod its a coarse grit, but other companies make them and some come in finer grits. I believe smith's makes one with a blue body and one end tapers down so you can work on serrations. I carry mine with me everyday, and being no bulkier than a ball point pen you can carry it with you everywhere too. Or something like Smith's blade medic is an option too. Then you got the pocket stones and other options which I have no experience with.

There are those DMT things that fit in your wallet. Heard they're good but to be honest I have no experience. I used to carry a piece of wet and dry folded in my pocket then lay it on a table to sharpen up quick then stick it back in my pocket but that has some serious down sides as I am sure you can imagine.

Good topic. It has helped me narrow my search down to a few.

I've used the Speedy Sharp for about the last 15 years. Have 4 of them scattered around with one in my hunting gear. Used on everything from Carbon steel to Stainless. It's a feel sharpener, as in just get use to the type steel your sharpening and pressure on the sharpener and edge. I can put/redress and edge quicker with this than any stone type. Just MHO!!!
