I should have a NMFBM on its way soon, and I was just wondering if any one could shed some light on sharpening the beast in the field? (and at home too I suppose)

I would search but... :grumpy:

:D

Thanks!

Carry a double-sided DMT diamond pocket hone, coarse/fine. Compact, lightweight, and will restore any conventional flat edge bevel with ease.

If you find yourself without a hone, but have access to a vehicle, roll a car window part way down and use the top of the glass just as you would a ceramic rod--works like a charm.

EDITED TO SAY: The above works well for the factory edge bevel on a CG NMFBM. For the LE or any convexed edge, many great tips from posters below.

I don't know what they make fields out of where you are from but around here they are usually grass and weeds. I suggest using a sharpening stone...

I thought stones were a no-no on convex blades...?

You can try bringing some sand paper out with you.
Half sheets of a coarse and a fine wet/dry paper...
and use your leg as the padding to maintain the convex.

.

that would be best,, put some work in on it before you get in the field,, then just sit back and enjoy the fresh Air .. a truly great convex edge, will get sharper as you use it on wood.. thats when i know i have a edge right,, beat some oak and then it feels more toothy... you got it workin right!

Great suggestions although the NMFBM is not convex, maybe it's just mine - but the LE is Was my CG NMFBM reprofiled?

Just get an Apex Edge Pro and drag it around the field. ;)

One of you hogs, I forget who, mentioned using an emery boad with sand paper glued to it. Small and compact. Never tried it but it sounded neat. Otherwise great ideas above. I just use the old sandpaper on the knee.

I'd suggest some loaded leather for the field, using sandpaper only in emergencies. It's sharp enough & strong enough that you should really only need to resharpen if it's been hitting rocks, etc, at which point you'll want to very carefully resharpen it at home so as mot to mess up. The edge is amazing. It REALLY pains me to part with it . . sniffle
