Field Shovels and Hatchets???

formtight - I will have a pic this weekend. I promised to do a full review with pics for my other 2 forums I'm on a lot. It's sorta like the Rowan coatings though...pretty tough. I don't think the marks I got it are equal all the crap I put it through!

but yeah, I'll get a pic or two up this weekend.

Nice! I look forward to seeing you put it through it's paces.

Here's my $20 CS survival shovel after my week solo trip. A few posts back in the thread you'll read all the stuff I did with it.

Anyway, as I promised, here's a couple shots I took in the shed just now. Sorry, no action shots...but I didn't take a camera on my trip and hey, it's a shovel. No need to use too much imagination there. lol!

as I said, it's got a coating that held up well, even to fire. It's PROBABLY second only to the Izula in $ to value in a tough outdoor tool (to me)

I have the CS shovel, and two of their hawks. The rifleman hawk is a heavy sucker, but throws awesome.

The Norse hawk is much lighter.

I have been throwing the CS shovel for about 8-10 year or so???

Still going strong. Throwing is about the most destructive thing you can do with tools.

I have yet to use my CS Shovel-I recognise what a practical tool it can be but every time I'm packing for a trip I opt for the hawk/machete combo instead. I need to make a duck canvas sheath for it and strap it to the ALICE as a spare BOB tool. It's obvious the thing is built to do exactly what it's designed for-just about every rough use camp task out there. The shovel is beefy, the handle is beefy (and comfortable) the finish is beefy... a product done right for sure.

I like my CS shovel.
I also like my mil surp version made out of thicker steel but otherwise identical.
(I traded one to shotty11, too - maybe he'll weigh in on his experience with it as well)

Do you guys have adapated shovels for snow or find the field shovels are the perfect all rounder?

I've carried an E German folding e-tool in the truck for years (STRONG pick on the back) and used it to dig cars out of snow.
It's almost useless in blowing powder, but so is a full size snow shovel.

Cleaning snow with shovels? Are you guys serious? Don't tell me i'm the only one who tried it with fire:confused:

sorry - don't carry a flamethrower in the truck for roadside emergencies.

I've got both in my truck..the Cold Steel and a collapsable plastic snow shovel. If you were setting up a campsite in the snow, the Cold Steel would work (although slowly), but around asphault and cars, nothing beats a snowshovel.

I didn't have a flamethrower either. But I did have some medicine that was needed and it has an interesting reaction when you mix it together

just yanking your chain, bro.
I do actually know folks who use a 250,000 BTU propane torch to melt snow & ice off their sidewalk & drive.
I live in the country - snow and ice help fill in the low spots in the gravel.
I use a tractor to clear snow most of the time. (and have used it to dig the truck out when it was stuck 3/4 miles from home - love my front loader!)

Don't worry I know you're yankin' the chain.
The story is my grandfather was explaining how to make snow tunnels since he is from a mountain area where they easily got 7 or 8 feet of snow in the winter (some say up to 10, but I think those are just legends) and how they used something that was found in the ground of that area (chemistry really isn't my thing) to blow up small patches of ice. So I tried my medicine since I remembered that it can spark a flame.

ever thought of a Kukri Machete instead of hatchet??

all I have for shovels is GI.. surprised no ones mentioned a Glock shovel, are they that bad..??

CS I've been pleased with EVERYTHING I've ever got from them..

I just ordered a CS shovel. I hope it holds up fairly well.
