If there were any truth to that the activities of soccer hooligans would be buried in the back pages of the newspapers because all the space in the front pages would be taken up by the cricket hooligans.

why are british footy fans "hooligans", but german soccer fans are "thugs"?:p

Origin of name
The origin of the name is uncertain, but it is known that it appeared in an 1898 London police report. One theory has the name coming from an Irish hoodlum from London named Patrick Hooligan; another has it coming from a street gang in Islington named "Hooley", a third lists "Hooley" as an Irish word which means a wild, spirited party.

Thuggee, a member of the now-extinct Indian cult. This is the origin of the word.

It's obvious you never experienced a toe cramp!:D

British football hooligans are mostly well-paid young men, not doleites. They need to be anyway to afford to get into the matches.

To fight over a sport is ridiculous, even worse when it's soccer. :barf:

Judging from the countless Budweiser and Erectile Dysfunction commercials they show during the Superbowl, I can see why folks who drink women's beer and can't get it up, don't like to fight. :o :D

Of course they weren't social. Neither are those who call themselves socialists/communists/maoists/marxists/stalinists etc (all the same to me, really). The word "social" is simply a sick euphemism for injustice and dictatorship and/or mob rule as opposed to the individual liberty found in a republic.

And the proletarians paid the bill as usually. Proletarian: from the latin: "Who only owns his child"
And ironically: " You have to be rich to inherit; the poors do not have parents" Baltasar Gracian, El criticon, 1657.

Please spare me the "but stalinism/maoism/whatever isn't/wasn't real socialism! They took Marx's idea and perverted it!" pseudo-argument.

No i won't spare you it.

There were and still are numerous socialist regimes all over the world and they all sucked or still suck...

That's true, and the word "socialist" is like the word "social":"a sick euphemism for injustice and dictatorship". In his french version: euphemism for liar.

The right quote.

It was just a comment. Go ahead on such a topic would implicate have a common definition of somes words and establish the truth about somes historical events. I don't feel brave enough for such a work which, anyway, won't interest anybody.

Hi All-

How about all the yellow and red cards given during the Netherlands vs. Portugal game this past weekend by the Russian referee? It tied the previous World Cup record for number of cards given in a match. I believe it was fourteen yellows and four reds given in the course of this game ultimately won 1-0 by Portugal.
