Hi all.

I was wondering wich steel would be the best for a 4.5" bladed bushcraft knife.

I know Dan Koster uses both (see knives for sale now).

What do you think would be the major differences from a user point of view?

Thanks
Marco

Marco, here is a link to a sticky at Dan's subforum, this is his take on it:

Personally, I love Dan's 3V; strong as heck, easy to sharpen (at least in a scandi grind), and I've not had any problems with edge rolling or chips. Seems to be pretty rust resistant as well, at least I haven't noticed any yet. One of my favorite steels.

3V, no comparison. When properly heat treated, it is far superior in edge retention and toughness, from the tests that I've done. I also live in a dry climate where rust is a non-issue.

Yeah I saw it. But I wanted more details.

Thanks for your help guys.

3V
Very tough steel - a true super-steel. At hardened thicknesses over 3/16" it is nearly indestrucible (in knife sizes). Great edge-holding too. Trade-off? Expensive!

S30V
Excellent stainless steel. Med-sized carbides. High carbon. Moderate-high in price. Difficult for some to sharpen - need diamond hones.
Best performing stainless for edge-holding.

"Best performing stainless for edge-holding", for me, that says it all.:thumbup::thumbup:

I ask because I'm working with Justin Gingrich to get a custom bushcraft knife :D
Something like this (knapperbill's custom Ranger):

I only have to deicide on the steel :s

3V any day. Much tougher, and holds a better edge. Unless you're planning to dive, stainless or no isn't a big deal, and if you are diving, then S30V isn't going to cut it, in my humble opinion.

All that says to me is that it doesn't hold an edge as well as carbons.

S30V

I am sorry but I cant stand it. I had 2 (folders) chip in that steel. I cant imagain it in a bushcraft knife. VG 10 is another story :)

Thats just me.

I've had S30V blades chip significantly as well, and would not use it as a first choice for a fixed blade Bushcaft blade.
