Fighter by Russ Andrews, JS

If I can get my act together Peter, I'll try to get a group shot that would show you how close our tastes are!!!! Those four, together, could easily lay alongside four of mine and you'd really see the similarity in style we both gravitate towards... Danbo knows...

Absolutley nice score on another worthy new maker!

LOL, Russ has been making knives for like 30 years.

That is an Outstanding piece Peter and to my tastes stands out amongst the other fine pieces depicted..the proportions are perfect the transition from handle to ricasso to choil are spot on..guard is thoughful..
the piece has plenty of Bowie blood in her but that is obviously intended by maker...AWESOME Example...Sheathwork too needs a nod as we have a total package.

Thanks to Steven, Anthony, and especially Russ himself for the responses.

I do hope I was clear about the subjectivity of all my points.

I definitely learned something today, and now definitely want to see a Russ Andrews knife in person--it is always interesting to see new/different things done well.

John

I gave away the only Russ Andrews knife I've ever had. It's high time I replaced it.

I knew that :foot: ... I've been drooling over some of his stuff for awhile... I think I meant about him just getting his JS for some reason???

Course, I've only had half of my normal caffiene ration today and too much Ta-Kill-Ya last nite!!!! :o

FANTASTIC!!!

I can understand what John was asking about, but having seen several of Russ's knives in hand, I knew the skinny ;) :D

The one thing about this knife that I wonder if only a maker would really truly appreciate... is trying to figure out/execute, that guard!!! Don't get me wrong, the entire piece is gorgeous and flowing...

How in the world do you do a sculpted, thin oval guard that flows into a ferrule spacer like that?!!?! I've seen you do it on many others, but I don't have a clue how you do it Russ.

Just an outstanding piece all the way around!!! :D

With the guard permanently mounted on the tang, and the front and sides finished; And with the ferrule permanently mounted on the handle, and all
shaping, filing, and maybe 95% of the final finish done to the handle: The
handle is slid up against the guard, and shape of the ferrule is scribed onto the back of the guard.
The handle is removed, and the finger recesses are filed out, finished, and
visible edges are slightly rounded so as to blend together. Then final
assembly.

Easier to see in the mind's eye, than it is to explain.

Thanks

Makes perfect sense Russ. What thickness of guard material did you start with for one like this?

I would sure like to try this. It has that super sharp/clean look of an oval guard and ferrule, but with the smooth flowing line of a sculpted guard.

VERY COOL!!!

Thanks Russ!!!  :D

Thanks,Nick.
The Guard is 3/16" 416 SS @ about 30Rc.
The ferrule is made from 1/4", same steel.
