Fighter for Blade...

That IS a gorgeous knife as is, but....I also think different handle material would make it even MORE impressive.

That being said, I think mosaic pins would give it a bit more eye appeal with the white micarta.

That is a great looking blade profile no matter what the handle is though.

Love the blade shape.

I don't mind the ivory Micarta but don't think it works that well with Damascus blades. I think Ironwood, stag or fossil ivory would have worked better.

I agree with you about the ironwood, but there's nothing but good here.

Your grinds and damascus are incredible.

Well, thank you all for the feedback! Looks like this one is a keeper. I actually made the first one like it early last year:

A few things have changed, like the grinds have sharpened up a little, and I do a sweeping plunge grind now.

So, anyway, I want to make this a regular model, and I'd like your help to work out the bugs.

Here's what I think could use some work:

1. I think the handle is slightly too big for this blade. Either slim down the handle, or lengthen the blade by 1/2" to 3/4".

2. I think the top branch of the guard should be slightly longer, maybe 3/16" or 1/4".

3. I think it would look better with another pin, preferably engraved or mosaic pins as someone suggested.

4. Maybe spacers between the guard and handle?

5. Better handle material, either high end wood, or real ivory of some kind.

Does anyone agree, disagree, or have something to add? I'm officially asking for your critique. :)

Hello All,

I agree with #2, 3, & 4—Good idea!

Spacers would look great. Your thick, thin, thick, thin combination, would work, however, a five spacer set up might appear more in portion, with the size of the knife. With regards to #5... Maybe rather than a different handle material—what about adding a butt cap[?], this might also address #1.

My opinion is, this knife is great! Love all your work.

Ok,really studied the knife. For me,I would shorten the bottom of the guard to more match the top. I personally like the micarta.I would give the guard a satin finish, like brushed pewter. The single pin is OK,but would go slighty larger and mosaic, would also match the finish of the pin, guard, and lanyard liner to a brushed finish.
As is what ya gotta have for it?:D:rolleyes::D

I just wish it had giraffe bone scales and some really nice brass hardware :p

If you're going to add giraffe bone and brass, don't forget to stick a piece of mokume somewhere on that thing.:D

Kidding aside, I'd like the knife a lot better if it had spacers of some sort between the handle and guard and probably a different handle material.

The overall design/shape of the knife looks pretty good.

Philip, love the blade and find nothing wrong with the size of either the blade or handle. Have no love for micarta or double quillions (which I think you know). Would love to see either a nice wood (DIW or cocobolo) or neutral color giraffe bone (none of those garrish dyes) for the handle material. Spacers and mosaic pins also would add to the presentation. Personally, I find the stainless quillion and the beautiful damascus too much of a contrast. Someone suggested a brushed finish; I think that may work better for me, too.
