OK, I'll bring the wrath of the tomahawk world down on me. Guns are for fighting. Axes are for working. Tomahawks are for making mall ninjas look cool - with one exception. 'Hawks can be an effective breaching/self-rescue tool and are used by professional soldiers for this purpose.

I agree with that first part especially.... and thats most on target in terms of the OP's questions I think. If I were concerned about self defense I would be thinking about a firearm not hawk versus axe or bowie or sword or whatever. I make and buy blades just for fun. To each their own.
