Im looking for something to go with my Spydie Chinook that I will purchase soon. A fighting/defesive knife in general. I was looking at the CS Desperado, but my hangups with it are the serrations and the steel.

Anyone know (or have suggestions) on something I can carry conceled on my belt with a easy to draw from sheath? Good steal is preferd and size does count. ;) I dont want some huge 14' bowie. However I dont want a 2' pocket knife. :) Links are appreciated since im relatively knew to the knife world so to speak. -Hunter

I was looking into the CS recon tanto and seems decent for defence. Right now Im looking into the busse/strider knives but money is an issue. I really like the CS tanto and probably end up getting one soon

You can check out any one of the MBC(Martial Blade Craft) line from Spyderco. These knives were specifically designed for self defense as their primary purpose.

I'd recommend the Gunting or Lil' Temperance.

Good Luck.

Just my opinion...

I think the Desperado would be great. The serrations work well for defense and the steel shouldn't matter. Right? I would say training and mindset are 50X more important than gear. As my motorcycle buddies used to say "Chrome won't get you home". (in a real deal, steel don't mean sh*t). Good luck.

How about a nicely sharpened Kmart steak knife carried in a brown paper bag with an apple? :)

Yes Magician.....you're right..its that 1 time that you'll be needing that defensive knife the most...heh, I like your motto's "chrome won't get ya home".

Just curious, what kind of motorcycle buddies did you have? Goldwingers or Hogs? :o

(I think I'll be settling on the Desperado, any other suggestions on a good lookin defense knife are still appreciated)

My suggestion: A .357 Magnum with a six inch barrel and semi-jacketted hollow tip ammo.;)

Back-up plan: RUN!!!!!!!!!!

less than .01% of people actually use a knife for self defense.:D

Invest in good shoes and RUN!

But, if you are going to stick around, I am very fond of the BM 800.

Running works for me. Barring that, I'd like a Camillus Madd Maxx. Need smaller? Try an AFCK in whatever flavor suits you.:D

Look at Böker Applegate/Fairbairn fixed blade. It also comes in a boot edition, slightly smaller. They have lead weights inside the handle, which lets you adjust the balance.

I rode witht he Tri-Lakes chapter of Freedom Of the Road Riders.
Mostly HD's but the occasional Triumph, Norton, Indian or even a Honda or two. It is a group of folks who love to ride and we lobby in Congress for motorcyclists rights. Open to anyone who rides any motorcycle. I believe there are chapters throughout Missouri and possibly nation wide.

You may llok in the "exchange" forums and try to find an old Desperado. They used to be AUS8 steel. That would be preferrred to the 420HC. I had one at one time and like it pretty well. It was extremely illegal here though. I also REALLY like the AF knife from Boker.

Yeah, I'm thinking of getting the chinook too since its a tactical and utility kinda knife. The gunting is one I'm getting now, its not one that you'll be able to pick up and master after a couple of minutes. You'll have to put some work into it. I heard from a friend that you can get a custom zytel shealth for the belt allowing for easy access to the knife.

You should be able to find a older Desporado in AUS8 on the web....

If you want to have a folder, i would take the Gerber Applegate. I don't have it, but as the shape of the Benchmade 3550 is very similar, I think it would be quite good for self defens. I've heard that the Gerber-steel isn't very good, but as Magican mentioned this knive must not be made of the best steel.
I wish you, that you buy one and have never to use it!

IF you are REALLY looking for a KICK-ASS "fighting/defensive" folder, then look no further than a Cold Steel Vaquero Grande.

If it's a fixed-blade that you are looking for, take a look at the Camillus Cuda CQB-1.

I hope I never have to use it too....but my brother was attacked by 3 men while he was with his girlfriend walking home, he's 25-30 years old, and has military history as well as secruity. However 3 guys bigger than you hopping out of a truck to jump you is scary...luckily he had his Cold Steel Vaquero with him, which he used on one of the men. He was in critical condition for a few months after he was stabed, but that knife saved my brothers life and maybe his gf's too. All 3 men are now in prison severing multiple years.

I dont want to run into that situation without a knife...Im tetering on the Desperado or CRKT's look nice too.

Anyone have any comments on those CRKT's? Hows the sheath work? Is it possible for me to put it on my belt upside down without the knife falling out? Hows the handle feel?

Thanks agian for your help guys, you people are kind and very very VERY helpfull. :) -Hunter

I second the earlier suggestion of the Camillus CUDA Maxx. It is small and light enough not to get in your way (I carry mine clipped to my pocket every day). The flippers allow it to be deployed very fast, even from a pocket draw.

I put a high defensive value on blade guards, which you will find on very few folders. Not only do guards provide some protection when blocking against a weapon, they also keep your hand from slipping onto the blade during a hard thrust.

The Maxx's wide Bowie blade has plenty of belly and length for effective slashing. The inward curving clip-point narrows down to a surprisingly fine point for thrusts. That thick D-2 blade is plenty tough for hard use, even behind that narrow point.

The "coffin" grip fits my medium-sized hand well in all common grips. Initially I was worried about the slick metal surface, but between the indents and the blade guards I can get a solid grip even with sweat-damp hands. (And if I ever get into a real fight they will certainly be damp! )

Finally, those thick titanium scales make the integral lock stronger than you will ever need. This is a folder that can be used like a fixed blade.

Interestingly enough, I've found mine to be a very handy utility knife as well. There are a lot of jobs that are easier with a big blade.

Heh, Thanks bob, Those cudas certainly are nice knives, however for my defensive blade im looking for something more in the style of the desperado and those tacticals posted earlier. Not to mention the MAXX is alot more expensive and I dont have the money to dish out on it. :( Even though I would most like to have one!
