What would the best edge be for a fighting knife? The AA that busse has in the store now says hollow ground. I am considering ordering one but was wondering in a real life situation would this really be the best edge for a fighting knife? I was thinking main blade edge with a scary sharp convex and hollow ground on top. What if you hit bone or another knife with a hollow ground edge? Would the edge hold up better then convex? Just curious of what your opinions are. I just remember reading a thread about a hunter with a hollow ground muk and said it dulled very quickly since he split the rib cage with it. I would think the AA could damn near take a arm off. Thanks in advance for any replies.

A hollow grind would definitely be the best fighting knife edge. They can be made pretty sharp, and that's really all you need in a fighting knife. Knife fights don't last long--you just need to make a cut as quickly as possible--and if your goal in a knife fight is to stay around after the guy's disabled so you can split his rib cage... dude  I do not want to get in a fight with you :p

Just a question... Gonna be a safe queen. I was just curious of what you all thought. I hope I would never be put into a situation where I would have to hurt another person. But hey if the zombie apocalypse happens you never know. Always nice to be prepared for the worse.

I have always thought a double edge or at least a back bevel like the old bowie s would be a great fighter ?

I have seen a few Busse's like that.

some Busse Barong's would be pretty cool

Ah, yeah, fighting a zombie and fighting a human are different things :p

Humans get cut once and it all goes downhill from there. They're impaired, making it easier for them to get cut again, furthering impairing them, and so on.That's why you want sharp and light. You don't need that durability to go through crushing bone and skinning and all that.

With zombies, you need to go through bone to stop them, so you'd have to use something heavier and more durable to crush the bone enough to go through it without taking much damage. Yeah, it's slower, but zombies are slow, too.

As we all know, the real thing to worry about in the zombacalypse are the humans, so get an AA for those troublesome folks and a blunt weapon for the zombies. After the guns, of course

I love the AA, but as far as fighting knives go I think the ST-56 is one of the best. The blade is supper light & fast, mine is .197" thick. I'm not fond of hollow grinds on a combat/fighting blade. They stick into things and then you have to fight to get it out. When the game is on, you don't have time for that!!!

I am not even thinking of getting into a knife fight! Ever!! (not when I have a couple of Glock 40s around :) )

But here is my sole representation of a fighter - although the teeth might catch on clothing, and that might complicate the defense ;)

Not having a lick of knife fighting experience other than fighting to keep from getting cut by one of my knives (;)), it seems to me that one would also not have time to worry about the choil getting hung up on flesh or clothing...especially clothing. My luck would be to thrust just as my opponent jigged away just enough that I got penetration through clothing, but not more than a graze of flesh, and now I'm also fighting to regain control of my knife because it's caught up to the choil in clothes... That ST-56 without a choil would be perfect.

I like these. They are Tank Buster variants...the other military overrun offered at last year's BLADE show. I especially like the one that is .22" thick (the other is a hair over .25" thick) with a slightly more tapered tip and a balance point around the lower half of the top tube fastener. Still 6+ full inches of bad news and no choil to worry about :) (And this is coming from someone who is a fan of choils for the most part).

Hollow grind means quick slashing cuts and decent penetration without drag in stabbing, and a lighter blade - more effective in a cqc with a human/animal. Convex - heavier sturdier edge for chopping. The much anticipated LB Team Gemini should make a decent fighter when it comes out.

All I can say, since I thankfully have no personal experience, is that it does not much matter which edge your knife has in a fight as long as it is suitably sharp and you know how to use it.

Hey Jaxx, That TB is one knife I think Jerry didn't Mka enough of. I wanted that one when I saw it but was to late to get to it.

That's for all the replies. I might just hold out for a TG. That way I can have another user. The AA looks pretty cool but I'm still up in the air about having a safe queen. I like knives I can use but it seems like its taking forever for the knife in the store to change. I ordered 2 b4's but I need some more. Ill keep cruising the classifieds and see it something jumps out at me. I might still get a AA... Man damn you infi for being so addictive!

One of the things that a martial arts instructor relayed to me was that a weapon is just an extension of your inherent movement.
Remember, Miyamoto Musashi was one of the baddest sword fighters around. His only defeat was to a guy with a wooden stick.
The efficient and timely exploitation of vulnerabilities almost always determines outcome.

Some of my favorite fighters :) yea the FF may be heavy but man it feels good, the two Tank buster variants are nice, but to choose on the harpoon NO is my favorite

My understanding was that they called it a draw. Muso Gonnosuke Katsuyoshi was the guys name and some records say they met twice the first time Musashi won, causing Gonnosuke to go away & rethink his strategy and "invent" the Jo and the style Shinto (or Shindo) Muso-ryu jojutsu. It is then unclear if Gonnosuke defeated Musashi outright or if the second bout ended in a "double defeat" (Musashi used a bokken instead of a katana). Either way, honour was satisfied and they both agreed to call it a draw.

EDIT: regarding the OP, it would all depend on what style of fighting you do.
